Here's another fun thread. How much do you know about the name of the bands you like? Here's some of the interesting things I found out but I'm sure most people already know: "Linkin Park" = spelling variation of Lincoln Park in Santa Monica (we all know this one ). "Marilyn Manson" = name of Hollywood icon + name of serial killer (ie. Marilyn Monroe + Charles Manson = Marilyn Manson) "Sugarcult" = named after a group of 7 lesbians living opposite the lead vocalist. "Avenged Sevenfold" = a reference to the Biblical story of Cain and Abel in the Book of Genesis. "Coheed and Cambria" = the names of the two main characters from the band's first two albums. "Evanescence" = means "to fade quickly" "Foo Fighters" = some sort of paranormal entity. I remember it's got something to do with UFOs and alien spacecrafts. :wth: "Funeral for a Friend" = as far as I know, a song by Elton John. I might be wrong on this one. "HIM" = acronym for "his infernal majesty", basically the Devil. "Mest" = named after the booze called "Milwaukee's Best". Apparently Tony was too poor to buy alcohol when he first started the band so I guess this is like a tribute to his favorite drink. "My Bloody Valentine" = a 1980s slasher flick. That's basically all I can think of but there are tons of bands out there with WEIRD names and some of them I'll never know the meaning of.
AFI - short for "A Fire Inside" - rumored to originally have been "Asking For It" however the band denies it was ever anything different. Good Charlotte - name of a children's book The Distillers - "To distill something is to take the essence out of something. It’s most related to beer, but I got it off this old, falling down distillery. " - Brody Dalle
rumor has it that limpbizkit comes from a game where a bunch of guys stand around a biscuit and masturbate, and the last one to finish has to eat the biscuit.....
Wasn't it something to do with Al Pacino in Scarface saying the f-word 182 times?? or is that a rumor? I think I heard it somewhere...
Wasn't it something to do with Al Pacino in Scarface saying the f-word 182 times?? or is that a rumor? I think I heard it somewhere... [/b][/quote] There's no real meaning behind '182' it's just a random number... Foo Fighters - 'Foo Fighters' is a thing back in one of the the world wars. They were fighter planes that no country claimed that they were theirs i think... Nickelback - Supposdly their rhytym guitarist used to work in a shop and always said "Here's your nickel back." So they used it... :wth: lostprophets - Was the name of a Duran Duran bootleg
12 Stones The name comes from Jesus' 12 apostles. 30 Seconds To Mars Jared Leto described the band name as something that is defined by the music and not the other way around. Basically, the music that his band plays define the name. It has nothing to do with going to Mars in 30 seconds at all. Adema Some kind of disease. No idea why the band is called that. lol. The Ataris I guess Kris was addicted to his Atari when he was younger. I read that in an interview. breaking benjamin When the band first started, the lead singer, Ben, broke his leg. So they called the band breaking benjamin. Ben hates the fact the band is named after him, though. Chevelle Pete's first car was a Chevy Chevelle. Daft Punk When DP first came around, a reviewer said that their debut album Homework sounded like "daft punk." I'm not real sure what "daft" means but the duo thought it sounded awesome so they adapted the name. Eiffel 65 The members of Eiffel 65 grew up 65 kilometers outside of Paris. The Eiffel Tower is located in Paris. Finger Eleven The name actually comes from the band's song "Thin Spirits." Scott describes the name as that one instinct in the back of your head that let's you do the right thing. Mudvayne A variation of mudvein. A mudvein is basically the intestines of any crustatean...but that's all I know about that. P.O.D. P.O.D. is an acronym for Payable On Death. Wuv's wife worked at a bank, and the term "payable on death" referred to what you received from any relatives of yours that have died, like an inheritance. So the band took the name and adapted it to mean whether you go to Heaven or Hell after you die, and they shortened it to P.O.D. SR-71 Named after the fastest military aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird. It's lead singer Mitch Allen's favourite plane. Staind A band in the area where Staind started was called Stained, so Aaron and the gang dropped the "e" to form "Staind" to distinguish the two bands. We can obviously tell which band was better. Trapt A variant form of the word "trapped." Lead singer Chris said that he felt trapped when he was starting to write lyrics because he was terrible at it, or something along those lines. TRUSTcompany The band used to be called 41down, but they changed their name so that they wouldn't be confused with Sum 41. I'm not real sure about the meaning behind the name TRUSTcompany, though. .. That's all I got for now.
Actually, they got it from a song by Planes Mistaken for Stars. === And, yeah, elaborating on the Adema thing -> edema. Tool - I remember reading somewhere that this was an insult that people used, so they decided to name themselves after it. 311 - The police code for nudity, I think? This applies to wherever the guys from 311 are from.. too arsed to look it up. System of a Down - Derived from a poem that guitarist, Daron Malakian, wrote entitled "Victims of a Down." Incubus - A mythical spirit that has sex with sleeping victims. Norma Jean - Marilyn Monroe's real name. Their original band name was Luti-Kriss but they changed it after being confused with rapper Ludacris. Green Day - Back in high school, their principal said that it would be a green day in hell when they got famous as a band. Sepultura - Original word is sepulture (burial/tomb), deriving from Latin sepultura. Would anyone happen to know anything behind Godsmack? Somebody once told me they stopped listening to them after she found out what their name was about.
They changed the spelling because they the internet domain name LincolnPark.com was taken, .net web addresses suck, so they changed the spelling to get a .com.
Adema is actually the swelling of the brain. It mostly happens when someone has overdosed or even just taken ecstasy - that could be the effect the music has or something...well it does through my headphones anyhow =P Wow I actually knew that >_>
