Who knows, I could be wrong lol. But Mike does use the Nord Electro a lot on tour. I just saw a red keyboard in the FM video and guessed it was the Nord. I remember his wife buying that for either his birthday or Christmas. But then again, Brad plays a PRS guitar in the FM video but when they play the song live he uses a Strat. These guys confuse me sometimes
I guess it is a little bit sexier in design. Brad does the same thing with "The Catalyst". In the video he plays a Fender Jaguar, but I've yet to see him actually hold a Jaguar on stage or in the studio.
Mike has a particular setting on the Line 6 POD that he likes to use in the studio, it's an echo with a ridiculously long decay time that I think he originally used on sampled stuff but at some point got the idea to use on guitar, and that's where the Tinfoil/Powerless/Waiting for the End "pad guitar" sound came from (it also shows up in It Goes Through and Dancer on the Mall soundtrack, although Dancer doesn't use the octave effect). It's pretty much just that echo effect with an octave up setting on an Electro-Harmonix HOG. When he plays it live he uses an Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail reverb, a Boss delay pedal, and the HOG. As for the Final Masquerade synth, it might be a setting on the Nord or it might be a patch they came up with from scratch, Mike ends up creating a lot of his own keyboard sounds. Also, he's using a Nord Stage 2 on tour, not the Electro 3 he got a while back. The stuff they use in the music videos isn't usually very indicative of what they actually play the song with.
Still wondering what's Brad's setup when does the solos on GATS, War, and ALITS. It's probably a lot more simple than I imagine. It's a little bit of a thin but wild, shrieking sound for a solo. It sounds he has the sweeping effect of a wah pedal or filter, but the sweepiness isn't fast or wet enough to make me think he's using those.
Does anyone know how to recreate the vocal effect from the start of The Catalyst (for free)? Also, what effect is on the drums at the last half of the first chorus of Final Masquerade. Did they just reduce the volume of the upper frequencies in an equalizer?
