I am noticing fewer and fewer guitar solos in mainstream rock these days. There are SOME solos (going under by evanescence) but that ranges only about 4 bars or so, not a fully developed solo. Do you feel solos are important? Do you think there should be more/less of them? Let the debate begin! My view: Solos are crucial points to most pieces of music to serve as variety and also for interest! However, it takes a lot of time, (and creativity) to do them, and you don't need solos for the music to sell, so most bands don't do it. I would like to see more solos in rock. Not just guitar solos. The bass should have some cooler parts in the song and stand out more, and the drum fills and beats are lacking these days, I would like more stuff like that. I think that what kills most nu-metal for me...
It depends...Where the artists want to bring their music, and what they think that audience would want. But yeah you're right, artists are making less guitar solos. I think LP should do a jam session with a killer guitar solo by Brad or Mike
Little solos are cool, but a too long one is kinda useless... OK, some band make them fit into the songs but some don't...
Iv always wanted to hear Chester do his rock thing, then Mike do his rap thing and after that a nice big long guitar solo just like Metallica
Solos are great, but only when they're short, like maybe no more than 15 seconds. Metallica's solos are like 5 minutes long and just get boring after a few seconds.
I like In Flames' solos. Their awesome. I like solos, but I don't want band forcing solos. They'd sound like crap. Some songs just don't need solos. Its up to the bands.
Well, i prefer a netat riff to a solo, as long as "solo" is the real metal one (not small nu metal ones).
I think a solo could be awesome if placed properly in a song. Two out of every 5 bands I listen to have solos on their albums, they just don't overuse them. If you have a solo in every song, then the music becomes predictable.
lol i was going to post that! lol well whatever you got to it first and yes its a great solo! mike smith is an awesome guitarist!

Sum 41 sometimes use solos. Nickelback... I think they only have 1 or 2 songs without a solo in it Even their acoustic songs have a solo!
True, if you use the same verse/chorus/v/c/solo/c structure, I agree. And yeah, solos don't ALWAYS fit into a song, but I'd rather hear a band who solos (even once and a while) over a band who doesn't at all, with a few exceptions (LP)
Personally, i dont like solo's.. Its good if its within a song for 30 seconds or more. But i hardly ever listen to instrumentals on cd's. but if its really good, ill listen. so im kinda mixed, if its good, ill listen, but none of that jimmy hendrix type stuff.. no offense
If you want to hear REALLY GOOD solos, try stuff from Michael Romeo (Symphony X) or John Petrucci (Dream Theater). John's solos on 'Under A Glass Moon' (in the Top 100 solos) and 'Lie' are among the best guitar solos of all time! EDIT: And the 'Underneath the Gun' solo is pretty cool, but unless you haven't noticed HES SUCH A RIPOFF of Tool's Adam Jones. Geez, they sound like they are trying to get the Tool atmosphere, with Fred trying to fade into the background with the music like Maynard. At least they had their own sound before...
hey to the guy that posted with the lost prophets signature, nice man, the new album sounds ******* awesome, pickin it up, and about solo's, i play guitar, 6 months now. and i know a few of the openin solo's for metallica and the underneath the gun solo, and i mean, in my opinion solo's are an amazing showing of skill, talent and speed, but not NEEDED to make a song a good song, Nu-Metal is music to relate to, to pick up and listen and when the song ends you understand the message and feel touched by it, there might not be as much skill involved to play the nu-metal songs, but they shine in their own way, to be breif, Solo's are great but for the era of music that most of the world is in, not needed to really make the song much better. I dont know about you guys but i wouldnt want a two minute solo in one step closer, it would totally take away the agressive energy the song uses in my opinion.
I THINK guitars are the soul of music... and they don't belong in the background... sometimes... they need the spotlight... because words can take you to a point... but a guitar takes you furthur... it's a skill... and it's rock really. what is rock without a guitar?? so taking away the solo... that's just tragic... i mean... music has changed a lot... in some ways... it's getting watered down... back in the jimi days... with the who... led zeppelin... black sabbath... the guitar was extremely important... and i'm not saying to make the whole song like that... but i would hate to see them killed off... just to die... never to come back again... EVER!! man... how depressing do i sound??!! i should stop now... i just like guitar solos is all.
I solos. Usually guitar solos create a whole new atmosphere to the song, and I love it. I think solos give a lot of substance to a song. Yeah, there should be more solos.. I'd like to see what everyone is able to do.
