I've been listening to linkin park since hybrid theory was first released. I'm not a hardcore fan and personally whether or not you like this music will depend on your taste. Most people who started listening to linkin park are fans of rock so they may not like it and thus linkin park may lose alot of there old fans, however people like me who are more open minded will look at this from a different approach, thus the reason why I find the catalyst a decent song, and something I will continue to listen to. Also I haven't seen anyone mention this, but the catalyst in my opinion sound like a great way to end an album, and looking at the track list, it's the second last song. Based off that I believe I can expect alot more lyrically and a more intense experience when songs from the album are released.

Well said blahblah123. Welcome BTW! Whatever ratings people are giving this song at the moment, I think it will jump 2 spots on everyone's list. Right now for me it's' at 8/10. If ATS is executed the way I hope it does, TC will get 10/10.

It's not my favorite LP song ever, but I like the song. I love the synth sound which a lot of people seem to hate, but I really don't like the electronic drums. I wish they had played real drums throughout the whole song. The end is great. I would like to see how they're going to perform this song live.
    I give this song 6/10.

If this is one of the weakest tracks on the album, or THE weakest track, I'll be very satisfied. Can't wait til the album arrives.

I give this song an 8/10. I think that's fair. I pretty much got everything I wanted and expected, except for the repetitiveness in the lyrical structure. I wish there was at least something else that Chester would have said, but even with that, and it being almost 6 minutes long, it really doesn't feel like it's that long of a song. It's good because the constant change of the music keeps the listener interested. One thing that is a big plus in my mind is that neither Chester or Mike lead this track alone, they lead it together, and that is amazing.

I agree 100%. I feel LP has lost the energy that a lot of us fell in love with. Its cool if they change just keep the base of what made people fall in love. When it came to MTM it seemed they tried to drop everything LP. If they do that there not really LP any more, there a band trying to be something else. Like in the "something new" video when Joe is talking and he says "whats something we can do different to the song, to like un-linkin parkenize it." I dont understand why they are forcing this change upon them trying to get rid of the LP style. I think if they wanna make a change to keep what has made them successful and try to build on and make it that much better, not have it then dump it and try to re-build. If you wanna redesign your house you dont knock down the structure, you just change the inside.

And the ones that were complaining that the internet has played a huge part in the cd sales. Thats fine but its funny that HT is diamond and Meteora is the most successful album in the history of the Modern Rock Tracks chart. I mean that says alot and MTM is none of those things. Meteora might not have sold as much but it did bust out 6 singles out of 11 songs.

And before people start trippin and say "you need to grow up, times are different" I want you to know that I actually enjoy MTM and dont really hate on it. I just think it was wrong of them to do so

So a day after its release, my final verdict on Catalyst: 5/10... I probably would've given it a 6 or 7 on first listen, but I havn't had the urge to listen to it at all today cuz i know it's gonna start to annoy me hearing that monotonous God Bless Us Everyone vocoder voice looping over. Apart from that I really dig Chester's chorus, cuz it actually has some dynamics and energy. But it's definitely an album track, not a single.

I totally agree there. It absolutely flies by, doesn't feel it's lenght. And that's a good thing.

That's not what he says, watch it again.

Why are you using album sales as a justification for why you think LP should have kept their old sound?
That's totally bogus. You really want them to aim for sales with their music?

Im not trying to, i dont really care for record sales. People were saying that record sales have nothing to do with it because they have declined. Im just trying to say that they may have reclined but that didnt stop Meteora from reaching the radio success it had. MTM didnt have really have any major impact among the decade as the other 2 did.

And im sorry i kinda summed up the quote but they did say the part of un-linkin park it

When Meteora came out, music piracy was not nearly as wide-spread as it is now. A lot has changed in the past couple years.

I just watched the Lyric Video for the song on YouTube. Couple all the idiots complaining about the song for ridiculous reasons there, along with many people here that are griping about it, and I've had about as much as I can take. Jesus Christ, I honestly don't understand how people can continuously ask for the same stuff over and over again. Yes, people are entitled to their opinions, but justifying negative feedback by saying "they need to go back to their roots" is honestly pissing me off. If those people were honestly fans at all they would know Linkin Park are constantly trying new sounds and musical approaches. If you don't like the song, that's fine, I can completely respect that. I love it, but I'm not going to argue with you over an opinion. But to complain that it's not another Hybrid Theory or Meteora is bullshit. Bands that use the same structure over and over again simply demonstrate they're good at only one thing.

Perfect example: Disturbed. I used to love Disturbed, and I still do enjoy their music. But for God's sake, listen to their new single, Another Way To Die. I'm pretty sure every riff and melody in that song has been used previously by the band. They rarely show diversity in their songs, and it's gotten me to the point where I'm not even excited about their new album Asylum. I'll probably end up getting it, but it's nothing I'm anxious about.

I guess my main point here is that I'm frustrated with fans. I go look up Disturbed's new single, and I see nothing but positive feedback. I see Linkin Park's new single, trying something completely new, and fresh, and I literally see 90% of the feedback as complete thrashing. I acknowledge that the song isn't perfect, the lyrics are in short supply, but if the sole reason you're complaining about the song is because it doesn't sound like Hybrid Theory then keep your god damn mouth shut. I'm sick of it. Those days are over, and that's precisely why LP is as big as they are in the music scene right now.

    Okay, that's my rant. lol

I was trying to make that point yesterday but thanks for bringing it to light. Perhaps I should've not used the numbers but rather the success the albums gained. It was a mistake to bring the #s into the situation because I had a funny feeling it would lead back to this whiplash.

And that is the one problem I've dealt with Linkin Park fans (and myself because I did it when Reani and Meteora came out) lol. Defend it to the death.

Oh it was pretty full blown then. The era of Napster was over, and Bittorrent / Kazaa and IRC had filled the void Napster did. Even nowdays, Piracy is insanely rampant, with the rapid/mega/deposit workarounds.

i would give 'The Catalyst' an easy 7.5/10 after 20 listens . i would give songs like 'what ive done' and 'crawling ' around 9/10 and 9.9/10 respectively.i would give 6/10 to 'in pieces' and 8/10 to 'new divide'

It's normal human nature. People like to stick to what they know. The entity in this song plays the image of someone else and not that of "Linkin Park".

Not everyone is a "die-hard" fan. Some are just your average fan that enjoy their music. They don't follow the band's foot step all the time.

Some people are complaining because usually when approaches like these happen, a band falls out of the face from the planet. As amazing their new sound is, the staying power is in their old content. That is not a good situation.

This is a case of they had their run as "Disturbed". Everyone's reached their limit and is either accustomed to their ability and refuse to explore (maybe visiting another country and fusing sound into theirs), a guitar is a device of endless possibilities to play music. To say you rarely see diversity now in their riffs, it just means they've gotten lazy.

In Disturbed's case they decided to keep their fan base happy and continued to find ways to emulate the same core sound, but not necessarily bringing something new to the table. My argument all along is that I am pretty confident that LP has the ability to emulate their core sound and bring something new to the table without sounding old and rehash.

This track gives me insight that this album will be awesome, the track itself though strays away too far from home.

LP is trying to spread out their music and are trying new stuff just to increase their fan base but in the meantime they are loosing their old skool fans.minutes to midnight was gud with tracks like 'what ive done' which are better than 'the catalyst' on any day of the week.i guess they should have atleast stuck to the sound of m2m
