I am just happy that LP is happy making the music they want. Even if I hated it I would still respect them for this.

But no way do I hate this. The Catalyst is frickin awesome.

I wrote out this long thing but I decided that since I'm not a mod, it's not my job. But I must say at least one thing: You say that it isn't about pleasing you. Well it sure seems that way. You said that you want them to grow on their sound (whatever that is). That's what would please you. Unfortunately for you, you're right. It isn't about pleasing you. But it's also not about them growing on their sound. It's about them doing whatever the hell they want and whatever makes them happy. Fortunately for me, that's what will please me.

Coming from someone who's played drums for about 8 years, that's not really true. While the drums at the outro of The Catalyst are some of Rob's best on record, TLTGYA is MUCH harder to play. The Catalyst drums are showy, but it's definitely more complicated.

There's a lot going on in the drumming of TLTGYA that only a drummer would hear, much how there's probably a lot more going on in The Catalyst synth-wise than someone like me, who isn't very experienced with synths, can hear.

Song would be awesome if they removed 2:40- 3:24. I didnt like the cluster fuckness of the electronic beats towards the middle it got old and boring and even when my friends and i listened to it its like we all lost focused to the song around the middle and came back for the end. I read a very good quote that someone posted yesterday. "forcing yourself to like something isnt being a fan, its being a sheep" thats how i feel a lot of people are like on here. Eating up all the stuff that LP throws your way like a dog. Damn there were people saying how the edited MOH song was the best thing LP every created and was the greatest single ever. Its kinda ridiculous

Having listened to it on my HD650s... I can still say I don't care for it much. If this song was two minutes long, it would be alright. People that are praising its "complexity" ... well... it's complex, for Linkin Park. It's pretty run of the mill drum n' bass stuff if you compare it with that genre, though.

    Please see:

.. for how to do it correctly.

While I respect LP for trying this, it's not working for them. It might grow on me with respect to its place in the entire album, we'll see. It might be a missing piece between its predecessor and its child. Who knows? But as a standalone song, with exception for the last two minutes, it's not very special.

That said, the final two minutes are some of the better tunes I've heard from LP. It shows the direction I was hoping they'd go. It's still got the basic LP formulaic feel, but it steps just a bit beyond it. Still not a fan of the overproduced vocals. I hate this trend.

im sorry, but am I NOT allowed to have an opinion about something without having someones "expertise" rubbed in my face? I understand you have experience with instruments and everything, but please do not tell me that my opinion is wrong just because i dont "know as much as you do"

You know what? This song really reminds me of Inception.

The synth breakdown in the middle would be perfect for a music video featuring that gravity scene in the hotel, in my mind.

Well, the technical complexity of a piece isn't really opinion, it is pretty objective. Whether you enjoy it or not is different and subjective, but the actual technicality is pretty objective. I don't think ALG meant any harm, and if he has more experience in drumming and recognizing complexity then he is a better authority to discuss such things.

Thank you. Also, I was quick to point out that I wasn't an expert in synths, so I wouldn't understand why some people love the synths in the Catalyst. I don't know how that makes me very "elitist." I was in no way saying you were an idiot, Jay, I was just saying that any drummer would say the TLTGYA has much more advanced drumming.

Sorry if I came across that way.
