In what I consider to be possibly the most shocking/surprising news to come out of Tomb Raider/Eidos in a while, Eidos is being bought out completely by Square-Enix meaning that since Eidos owns the rights to Tomb Raider, Square-Enix will be owning and maybe even developing the Tomb Raider franchise in the near future: This could be great for the series, like REALLY great...as long as they don't try to make TR into an RPG (which was tried with Angel of Darkness but failed). I'm cautiously optimistic.
Yeah, this news really took me by surprise. I guess this is Squeenix's way of becoming more competetive in the western gaming markets.
squareenix could be more competitive in the western game market if they would sell more of their dang games over here and not have year long gaps before japanese games come over seas.... they have a giant market over here... alot of people import and play the games in japanese just to play them... and theres even more then that that would want to play the games if they were available...
Core (original developers of TR back in the 1990's) tried to do an RPG format with Angel of Darkness and failed miserably.
I was going to post that Square won't make a Tomb Raider game yet keep working on Final Fantasy XIII until it comes out...in 2020.
Square-Enix are the kings of RPGs, though. I'm sure they'd be able to make a really good Tomb Raider RPG.
I'm sure Square could morph Barney the fucking dinosaur into the greatest RPG ever. It's fucking Square. Come on.
This is a surprise. My brother was talking about how EA were apparently rumoured to be buying them just a day or two ago. Incidentally he's also a ridiculous Squee fanboy.
http://http://www.edge-online.com/news/square-enix-cites-major-eidos-franchises The fact that they listed Eidos' "talented development studios" as one of the main reasons for the purchase leads me to believe that all of the Eidos franchises will still be in the hands of their respective studios (Crystal Dynamics with Tomb Raider, IO Interactive with Hitman, etc.).
