Personally I'm getting a bit mad about all the rock coming out today that has basically the same structure to the song: Intro(guitar then adds in other instruments)/Verse(usually softer)/Chorus(louder,distorted guitars)/Verse/Chorus/Bridge(half a minute or less)/Chorus + Ending Another thing is that most rock songs are written about the same tempo with no changes in tempo and are all written in 4/4 time! What happens is that all these songs start sounding the same and I'm noticing that most bands have songs that are 3:00 and 3:30 in length with little or no longer songs (5 mins or so) because they don't use other song structures. Do you notice the same thing or are you fine with most of the rock thats coming out today?
Alkaline Trio use Intro/Verse/Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Bridge in a few of their songs so I listen to them when I get bored of the normal layout
If you look at a band like Linkin Park... They didn't want to take too many chances with Meteora because they didn't want to alienate their fans (as if that would happen). That's why most of the songs off of Meteora follow the Intro > Riffs > Verse > Chorus > Verse > Chorus > Bridge > Chorus > Outro structure. Personally, I don't mind it too much as long as the songs are different from each other lyrically and sound-wise (Meteora's songs are all pretty much the same lyrically but different sound-wise), so I don't really mind it. But if you look at a band like Disturbed, whose new album Believe has a weird song structure... Intro > Verse > Chorus > Verse 1 again > Chorus > Bridge > Chorus > Chorus > Outro... And that's the majority of the songs on that album. It's not bad, but hearing the same verse twice in a song is a little weird. Back to LP. The reason their songs aren't 4+ minutes in length is because they believe that if a song is that long, it better have something spectacular to keep the listener listening otherwise it would get boring. That's why none of their songs are that long. I doubt they think they can't make it not-boring, but they just don't want to bore the listener. ... I wonder if what I just said made any sense at all.. lol.
i dont really bother about the structure, as long as its a good track its either that or 6+ minutes of metallica screaming 'anger'
On the contrary long songs can be done well and have been done well by lots of bands! I hate to admit it, but to do longer songs (more complex structures) you have to be more creative, more talented, and have more knowledge of music and theory. And thats why songs aren't as many long songs anymore. There are fewer rock musicians who take the time to be formally trained in classical music and theory and so don't have the knowledge and skill to pull that off. The people in Dream Theater (one of the most talented bands EVER) all did post-secondary studies in music. The keyboardist was a prodigy at age 9, the guitarist and bassist were in a music academy where they met the drummer and Labrie came later. I don't think anybody in LP or in mainstream rock has that much musical background.
I have noticed a sudden influx of punk/rock/pop bands that are now hot stuff. Like All-American Rejects, Brand New, Blindside, The Ataris, Something Coperate etc. They all sound the same basically. When I was visiting my friend in Ontario in July, she had tons of burnt CD's with all these bands that sounded the same. It all became a mass blurr after awhile..
