There's a bit of a story to this...I recently downloaded VLC Media Player because it supports more formats than any other player. After doing so, I deleted Realplayer, not remembering that I use Reaplayer for all my CD ripping/burning. Crap, I say. Oh well, no biggie, I can just redownload it from the Real site, right? WRONG. I get this whenever I try running the installer:

    Setup Error

Setup decompression failed, possible download error.
Please download this file again or contact your system administrator.

I've redownloaded the file, didn't work. There's something on Real's website about antivirus software possibly causing this error, so I disabled all of that, still didn't help. I literally closed every program I had running in the background that wasn't a critical system process, and I still can't get it to work. Any help, please?

Download it from an alternative host?

Get it from an oldversion.com sort of thing?

    Maybe that'd work.

Tried the alternative host, no luck there. I guess I could try downloading an older version, but that doesn't seem like it'd do me any good if I'd just get the same error message when I tried to upgrade anyway.

I just posted a rather angry message on Real's support forums, maybe I'll get an answer from them. :p

Realplayer sucks anyway, you can easily get a better program for those purposes.
    Even WMP would be better.

Dude, I've used ITunes for burning since I've gotten Vista and it's excellent..use that.

Furthermore, while yes it's Microsoft..the newest WMP will rip your songs in seconds..and in mp3 format. I've used it and while it isn't 100% the best mp3 codec, ripping it at the top quality, I cant really notice that much of an issue.

I only use Realplayer for .ram/.rm files (whatever they are). If I burn CDs, which is really rare for me to do, I usually use iTunes. I manage my iPod with Winamp but I find that burning CDs with iTunes is insane. It's so fast it's crazy. Sometimes I'll use Windows Media Player to burn CDs but that's about it. CD ripping is Winamp. I try to use Winamp for everything, but iTunes pwns its burning ability. VLC for all the video stuff since VLC can play every single video ever basically ^_^

I'll try the downloader when I get home and if it doesn't work for me then there's a problem. For now just use an old version :p Not really a problem. I hated the newer iTunes so I went back to 6.0 and disabled upgrades so that's where I am.

btw, didn't see you on MSN/AIM yesterday.

I never even knew Winamp could rip CDs, I've always just used WMP *shrugs*.

I use Realplayer over WMP for burning because WMP automatically creates 2-second gaps between songs, and I HATE that. Plus Real can rip CDs in WAV.

I also hate iTunes with a passion that rages in the very depths of my soul. :p

And yes, I have tried doing a System Restore, and for some reason when I do it, the Realplayer program starts to open and just crashes. realplay.exe will show up in my Task Manager for like, 5 seconds, then just completely vanish.

if you want to rip cd's, use it the better way and get exact audio copy. you can even make your own scene rips.

You can take that option off at the (suprisingly) options.

If it is I'm not seeing it. It was an option on Realplayer but I see it nowhere in the options for WMP.

*Edit* In fact, it isn't an option, I found this in the WMP Troubleshooting section:

I believe you have to "pay" for Winamp Pro to rip and burn.

I think you just have to "pay" to rip faster, but I might be wrong.

LOL. Well you can close this thread now, the weirdest thing happened. I went on my brother's Windows account and it installed just fine! I was all "WTF" because we both have administrative accounts on the computer, but whatever...it's working again, so I'm cool.
