I've heard about these 2 genres in this forum but I have no clue what they are. What are they and what would be some good examples of them???
Ska is a genre that uses percussion instruments. Less Than Jake is a great example of a ska band. Emo is short for emotional and it's basically a form of punk. Finch is another great example of an emo band.
Another really great band that blends a ton of Ska into their music is Operation Ivy. The band consisted of Dave Mellow, Jesse Michaels (now of Common Rider), and Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman (now of Rancid). You can find out more about them here. There are a lot of people who still consider OpIvy one of the greatest bands ever, even though they were only around for about 4 years.
Yeah, but it's hard to categorize all of this stuff because everyone has different opinions on what each band's style should be considered. One person may say a band is one thing, and the next person completely disagrees.
Saying Finch is another example of an emo band is like you're saying you mentioned another emo band. Sorry, too much FCAT. I agree with coley. I mean, there are people who think Linkin Park are emo. It all depends on a persons mind.
Screamo's like Dead Poetic. Ska bands Deals Gone Bad The Indecisives Mustard Plug Emo bands Bright Eyes Dashboard Confessional Taking Back Sunday
Honestly I kinda think wasting your time classifying bands is stupid. I dont care if people call the stuff I listen to BluesJazzRapEmo, I like it and if they classify me as someone because of it, thats really sad.
Yeah, I think that the emo and punk terms is just micro-managing. It's all music, why does everyone have to classify everything?
I agree that people tend to over-classify things, but when it comes down to it catogorization is just helpful. If you really like Reel Big Fish, maybe you want to hear other bands that sound like them. If they were just a "rock" band, instead of a "ska" band, your search would be a lot harder. I don't have a problem with people catogorizing music as long as they don't get stupid and fight about it. When you get into an fight with someone about what kind of music Good Charlotte play, then you're taking catogorization too far, IMO.
???
What do you mean "isn't music"? I know people who say metal bands are "just noise and not music"
What do you mean "isn't music"? I know people who say metal bands are "just noise and not music"
do you want me to hurt you? because I will. *gets out poker* Yeah biatch!
do you want me to hurt you? because I will. *gets out poker* Yeah biatch!
Me? *hides* I never said I agreed with them. Poker? I play poker...
Another good example of ska would be (if you haven't noticed from my sig) Five Iron Frenzy. Although they aren't together anymore, they are still one of the few ska bands I actually like. Some songs you should check out are Pre-Ex-Girlfriend, You Can't Handle This, Kamikaze, The Day We Killed, Farewell to Arms, On Distant Shores, Every New Day, Where is Micah?, The Untimely Death of Brad, A New Hope, These Are Not My Pants, and That's How the Story Ends (which finishes off songs like Where is Micah?, These Are Not My Pants, Kitty-Doggy, Combat Chuck, The Untimely Death of Brad, etc..).
