    Roanoke

Sleet and snow mix in the foul air, as the men and I search for this lost colony
Through the harsh weather we arrived at the initial destination
With a painful throat I yelled out, “Is any one here, will you answer me?”

A sight of distress is all around us, with broken tents, we are too late for their salvation
It looked as if a battle had been fought, but no bodies could be found anywhere
I followed a blood trail; and saw claw marks on a sign that said one word, "Croatan"

The trail stopped suddenly, with only a broken musket and a small wooden box
Inside laid personal objects, and a few letters tattered and crumpled
I picked one up, and it simply read…..

To my dear Mary: May 23rd 1587

The waves tossed the ship to and fro, and I wonder what we did to merit this
It had been a long day at see when finally the watcher called, “Land Ho!”
The ship docked on a beach far off course, but still the men were in high spirits

Now stepping off the ship, I couldn’t believe how far we had come
I saw a strange land, with a thick fog setting below the tree line
And a crimson horizon up a head, as the sun sets reminded me of home

But there is something a miss throughout the land, I sense a masked evil
Strange things have occurred through the pasted weeks, people have gone missing
Tension grows in our camp, and I cannot sleep without fear, our state is critical

I wish I had more jovial words to write you, but I pray will you be fine in my absence
I would talk about the lush green meadows that stretch their arms out into eternity
Or the beauty of this untamed wilderness, but it’s all marred by this presence

I have been thinking of a name for this colony today, ever since I awoke
We have been so busy trying to erect proper shelter lately; no one has given it thought
But today the matter was settled, we are now the colony of Roanoke

Something has been howling almost like a wolf, but darker these last days
Some of the men and I are going to investigate, we have to know what is out there
I fear there are things here that are evil, and if so, I pray they don’t come my way

I will write again in two weeks, I do hope this message will make it back to you
    Yours truly, Jonathan
