As the game is released shortly (or already as far as Japan is concerned) and it's a pretty high profile release at that, I figured I'd start a thread for general discussion regarding it.

I've played both sections of the XBL Arcade demo and the first chapter of the full game (which includes the "siege" section from the demo). The gameplay itself isn't a great deal different to RE4 although that isn't a bad thing by any means. Ammo seems to be harder to come across which is something from the earlier games that I'd hoped would be reintroduced. It's also very gory. Potentially the goriest Resi yet from what I've played.

I've played it a few times already and I hope to get it when it comes out on friday but I've gotta say that I'm not really all that impressed with it thus far. Don't get me wrong, it looks and plays brilliantly, but it's not really Resident Evil anymore. It's far more of an action game than a survival horror and the fact that that element has been almost completely taken away is quite dissapointing to me.

Resi 4 is probably the best game I've ever played and I'm sure when I get 5 it'll be a fun experience, but to me the whole idea of resident evil is so that it's dark and scary and now most of the scenary is bright which takes out the element of not knowing what's coming at you. The resident evil series has been the only game that I've been startled by or even slightly scared of it's content (resi 4 with those fucked up slow moving, weird sounding zombie test experiements...fuck right off!) but I get the feeling that wont be the case with number 5.

+no creepy english merchant=no win.

So far it's scarier than 4, to me at least. Or at least it seems to have more of a horror element this time, although the emphasis is still on action. Hopefully it does deliver on that because from what I've heard the most recent Silent Hill isn't much cop.

Well, the series started off way back when and first time players were like "AHH WTF ZOMBIE?!?!" But as time went on, people caught on to the story and it became not just like, "Hey, kill random Zombies." You go through killing but for a purpose because it's all scientifically brought on with the idea like "Don't mix Riddlin with Zoloft, it will turn you into a Zombie."

I've beaten Res 4 for the PS2 probably 5 times all the way through now and I STILL don't get bored of it, I loved the Res 5 demo for XBL and can't wait to buy the whole game.

Also, Resident Evil: Degeneration was AMAZING (It takes place after 4 and before 5.) Leon and Claire kicked ass, but mainly Leon.

So, I can't wait to pwn some ass with Chris.

I thought Degeneration was ok for what it was.

But RE5 does look like great fun, it's certainly not going to surpass RE4 for "best RE game EVER" as RE4 is one of the greatest games i've ever had a chance of playing...hell, I bought a Gamecube JUST FOR THAT GAME! Seriously, that's how much I wanted to play it. Still an amazing game.

Degeneration was totally awful. That said, 5 seems pretty good, and 4 was amazing.

Is it just me or is Sheva sometimes a really intelligent and intuitive AI, while at others she's the exact opposite?

Just about half way through the game now and I've gotta say it's fucking brilliant. The story progression is really good and I love how it plays so similar to resi 4.

I don't know, maybe I'm biased because I've always loved Silent Hill, but I think Homecoming is one of the better games in the series in every respect. And it still can scare the shit out of me at times.
As for RE 5, I still haven't tried it, so I can't compare them yet.

    RE5 is definite PWN.

I also thought Degeneration was amazing. Mostly because of how bad ass Leon acts. I mean, seriously, none of his bullets actually MISS. Watch it. Every shot hits the target.

I love Silent Hill too, I'm not sure whether I prefer that or Resi though. I haven't played Homecoming yet so I can't judge it, but so far it doesn't seem to have the best reputation compared to the other games in the series.

It's fucking brilliant. But being unable to shoot and run at the same time is a bit annoying.

This series died with number 4. I mean 4 was fun but it wasn't a RE game. Probably try 5 but I won't get my hopes up for
