One of my friends said she will give me a Rage Against The Machine and Coal Chamber album for free. And I've never heard either one of them. I've heard OF them but never any music. So I was wondering if you could tell me what they sound like, genre, rating...anything that will kinda help me decide if I even want them.
RATM: AWESOME BAND! Definately worth the listen. They're like the Beastie Boys with guitars and stuff. I recommend: Guerilla Radio, Renegades of Funk Coal Chamber: I know they're a crazy death metal band(i believe) but i dont know any music by them
Not death metal, Coal Chamber is more nu-metal. Rage Against the Machine is probably the best band of the 90's in my opinion, it amazes me that you've never heard of them. I'm not really into Coal Chamber, but some people like them a lot.
Rage Against The Machine: RULES! They, not Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit or Korn, etc. are the best Rap-metal. They combine great songwriting with catchy hip-hop elements, great political/social commentary, and Zach de La Rocha's distinctive vocals and great raps As for Coal Chamber, I'm really not into them.
I don't like Rage Against The Machine (the vocals are terrible and I generally hate political bands anyway), but Coal Chamber are amazing.
chances are if you like OTEP, you'll like Coal Chamber. I, personally, hate Coal Chamber. Lyrics are just so generic. Go for Daz's other band, DevilDriver. As for Rage, they're okay sometimes. The Battle Of Los Angeles is a good CD, but their best song(s) by far are from their self-titled CD. Don't bother with the RageGarden knock off Audioslave though. Please. For me?
If I could go for any CD it would be L.D. 50 (Mudvayne). But like I said, my friend are giving them to me for free. To the lyrics thing: Yeah, most bands are going to be generic because there is no longer a such thing as "originality." And although I hate it when lyrics are like Adema (I like them, but c`mon, the lyrics almost always bite.)...well then I gotta step back. If the lyrics are extremely generic I won't get it...just for you. I may look this band 'DevilDriver' up though. Oh and yes, I love otep...but the lyrics. Agh. What pisses me off the most is whats in the booklet. "eye'm" bothers me the most. The lyrics may have meaning, usually sick and twisted..and perverted..meanings...but they aren't very deep. I'm not asking every lyricist to be a philosopher, but let's try and keep lyrics from the female version of jonathan davis also...
There are reasons for Otep Shamaya's spellings of certain words and her uses of certain words and/or phrases. I think OTEP's music is highly originally, and proof of that is her upcoming appearance on Def Poetry Jam on HBO. What other female metal artist can go on a show like that, and be successful? Not many. From the 'Otep F.A.Q.' at otep.com/forum
I'll check that link. And I didn't mean Otep isn't original. What other woman can do the whole growling deep voice thing, period. She is talented, the rest of the band...from what I've seen anyways...not so much. That doesn't change the fact that I don't like the sound, but the technicality of the music isn't difficult. Other from the overly used bass-following-guitar, guitar-playing-power chords, they are quite original. And you are right, not many women can sing about getting raped, screaming to where you can sometimes not understand what she is saying, and write very violent/graphic lyrics. It's not that I don't like her lyrics, it's just that a person in the same position could write them. Lyrics have to be exceptional to stand out to be, not just "oh that's pretty damn good." To me, there is a difference. Nevertheless, whining about her life and talking about our stupid ass government is quite cliche and generic, and quite unoriginal. So really, I guess this may be confusing. Her lyrics are original because they are from her point of view, but unoriginal because so many people use these themes. Oh, and is that her real name? The friend that introduced me to them says thats not her real name, but she doesn't remember what it is. That's what the booklet says though, I'm confused about that.
EDIT: Her real name is indeed Otep Shamaya. It's all on the site I gave you, I believe. somehow I don't think Jonathan Davis was raped by his dad. I don't know, maybe one of these days I'll start a topic on cliche lyrics or something. All I know is OTEP's poems are very ####### unique lol. Example: Look at the Sevas Tra booklet. It's all in there. aaanyways, I'm off topic.
hmm... wow. That is very good. What song is that from? I have heard all of the songs, but sadly I don't own the album, but my best friend Jessie does. (Shes the one that told me about this band) and I was over at her house listening to them. I only read a couple of the songs. The one that sticks out is the last song. I forget what its called, something town tea. And it was about her getting raped... I don't think Jonathan Davis's dad raped him either. Atleast I hope not. What I meant was his whole negativity, pessimistic lyrics. And I compare (i dunno why, i just do) his "i wanna die because my life sucks even though im a millionaire" lyrics to her "i was raped when i was 12, and the pain is still with me". Yeah, I'm sorry she was raped, but a lot of people are raped. Their are also a lot of songs about rape/sexual abuse/etc. Now I'm kinda forgetting what I was talking about. I hate it when that happens.
Agh! Casey! Agh! *Shakes fist* I don't even know what my point was with the whole lyrics thing. Maybe I just thought they we're generic but you completely changed my thoughts on that, and I was trying to defend my non-existent ...ergh thoughts...that I no longer have...? Yeah well anyways, yeah. Well...those lyrics we're good. And she is a talented writer. But the fact of the rest of the band being not-so-good at their instruments was...uh..a fact. Yeah, ok, you win.
listen to the Jihad EP and then tell me the rest of OTEP isn't talented. they've changed lineups on every album since.
I'm guessing the whole line-up beside Otep herself? Well I can't listen to it, because I don't have it. I will look up tablature on it, and see how many riffs I couldn't pull myself. (I play guitar and bass...so I'm not saying the band itself is so untalented that a novice could play it, I'm saying that the guitarist isn't a Petrucci, and the bassist (evil-J? I believe..) isn't a ru-d. Actually...I don't think the guitarist is a delson nor the bassist a phoenix...) But I will look it up, because Otep is a worthy-enough band...being one of my favorites...

Yeah, the lineup for OTEP has changed, except for Evil J & Otep herself. One word of warning: the tracklisting for the Jihad EP is (I think) 7 tracks long, and contains songs that appeared on Sevas Tra. Only difference between the Jihad tracks & the Sevas Tra ones are that the ones on Jihad are completely different, harder & the lyrics are different. This is of course due to OTEP being signed to Capitol & other members leaving and whatnot. So yeah. BACK ON TOPIC.

He follows the guitar throughout most of the songs (I looked up blood pigs as soon as I heard the song.) and the guitar usually plays power chords. Hence the bassist usually plays the root notes hence single notes hence not hard at all aka he isn't a good bassist. NOW! back on topic.
somehow I think Evil J doesn't follow the bassist. One would think Evil J is the lead guitar player dude in OTEP. I know nothing about guitars and ####.
