Recently our internet has been lagging horribly. We have 3 or 4 computers connected to a DLink router shared DSL internet. I was wondering if 1) it was possible the router is overheating or something and 2) if a game such as World of Warcraft could be making too many connections overloading the router. Any help would be appreciated. And this happens when no one is running P2P applications.
I would probably turn off the computers you aren't using, especially if you're going to be running something that takes up a bunch of internet usage. And I own World of WarCraft, and I know that when my brother plays it, my laptop goes slightly slower, but I wouldn't call it "lagging horribly." But it could be in your case. I seriously don't know about the router overheating.
Wireless router? If so, make sure there's a password on the connection. Because maybe your neighbours aren't being nice
Could be a bad router. I had a Netgear one that did the same thing. Returned that piece of shit to circuit city, got a Linksys and have no problems. Also, if one computer is using a lot of bandwidth (downloading something, maybe WoW, not sure how much b/w it uses) that will lag other computers. Your ISP only gives you so much downstream bandwidth....if one computer is using it all, the others have none to download stuff so page loading slows to a crawl. Happens all the time when my brother uses BitTorrent, so I cancel it and tell him to never do it again when I'm home
