I don't know whether this belongs in here or Kick Back Cafe >.> Well, it's technical so *Shrug* Move it if you think it doesn't belong here

So, my friend introduced me to these wonderful things called Swap Magic Disks earlier on today. For those who don't know what the hell they are, basically, they mod the PS2 to play NTSC games because the games industry hates us and won't give us the games we want here in the UK. It's pretty much a cheaper form of getting a PS2 chipped. About £60+ cheaper

This is a simple question: Has anyone ever used them before? I looked it all up, and the only think i'm not too keen on is taking/breaking off the front of the disk tray on my PS2 in order to play NTSC games. Any words of advice before I go ahead and buy one and dismantle my PS2?

ive heard of them but i also heard it requires some kind of installation. not just putting the disk in the drive but i mean taking part the ps2 itself. a side note, as far as i know this will void your warranty but, at least you can play "back up" copies of ps2 games.

it's quite a useful tool that i'm too afraid to use.

Yes, if you have the PS2 slim you have to do alot more work with the system because you replace the drive door with one that you can pop open freely.

My advice, don't buy the whole kit. See if you can get just the swap magic discs somewhere. You can MAKE the key that slides the drive open, I know, I've done it and there's detailed plans all over google.

Even better, use the memory exploit mod, get a hard drive and the final fantasy HD adapter and load game images onto the HD. It's not really much of an issue since you can't purchase NTSC games retail where you are anyway, so you'd only be lining the pockets of ebay sellers.

I used Swap Magic for a long time when I played my PS2, I still do use it. I originally bought it because games like MGS3 & Tekken 5 weren't released here yet & I wanted to play the imports. Mine worked great, and still does. Taking off your disk tray cover isn't that big of a deal, you can always place it back on if you wish.

With my Swap Magic, I got the slide key that you'll have to use. You could make that yourself I guess, but as far as playing imports and stuff, it works great. I really recommend it, and it hasn't harmed my PS2 in any way, it still works fine, which is surprising to say how many I've gone through in the past, haha.

@Palingenesis: It doesn't void the waranty, and even if it does *shrug* My PS2 is ancient anyway XD Thanks for your input =)

@Neil: Thanks =) I'd probably just buy the whole thing, i'm not good at the whole DIY thing myself XD Thanks though

@Joe: Oooh, good to hear that it works for you. Question, is there any way to easily remove the front of the tray? A lot of people say they just broke it off, and I looked at it to see how to remove it, and couldn't see an easy solution without a lot of pissing around.

Sorry if this is too late, but I think there is a way to detach it without it breaking, so you can fix it back on if you wanted to. Although, I actually snapped mine off and broke it, so it wouldn't permanently stay on. I didn't really care though because like you said, it's only a PS2 & I've had so many of them I just didn't care, haha.
