I've got a DVD+RW drive that can read DVDs and CDs and burn CDs just fine. But for some reason now that I want to burn a DVD it won't recognize a blank DVD. It spins the disc as it should be Windows never "catches on" so therefore it never recognizes that there's a DVD in the drive so none of my programs will let me burn the DVD because there's "no disc in the drive" even though there clearly is. I've got the latest drivers for my DVD+RW drive as well. Anyone know any quick solutions? Like I said it detects everything but blank DVDs and I'm 100% sure it's a DVD+RW (it's on the box).

This happened to my once w/ a CD-R and it messed up my whole drive lol. Some of the drives are very specific and won't respond to a broad range of DVD-R/Ws. My suggestion would first be try a different brand, since the drive is obviously installed and working fine with CD-Rs.

If that doesn't work, then I think customer support is the next best step. I'm not really familiar with burning DVDs unfortunetly. Perhaps someone else on here is more familiar. Hope things work out though.

Mmkay, it may be a DVD drive, but is it also a burner? As not all DVD drivers can burn discs.

    Just making sure. ;)

And if it is a burner, then it's most likely the brand of DVDs you're using.

It's a burner. DVD+RW means you can burn. And it says so right on the box it came in. I'm not an idiot, tomi.

I'm going to try another brand some time then.

Just making sure I was the idiot, not you, Will. Don't worry, I still love you.

And yeah, I'll back up Todd saying Verbatim is one of the best, I've also hear lots of positive feedback about them, pretty sure. :)

It's most likely saying that because the DvD is blank.. so there is nothing to read on the DvD in the first place. If it reads normal DvD discs, there should be no problems with it. Try booting your burning program (Nero preferably) and try to burn a dvd.

That's the thing. It picks up on blank CDs but not blank DVDs. And none of my burning programs (I've got like three on here) will let me burn because the "burn" button is greyed out.

But I'm going to try Verbatim some time. The ones I was using were Fujifilm so that doesn't say much.

I wouldn't think it's the DvDs. My guess is that the drive got knocked around in shipping and the DvD laser is fucked. Take it back, get a new one... same brand should be fine.

I can't return it since I've had it for a really long time. It was an external hard drive and I took the actual drive out of its casing and put it inside my tower. It still works just fine and everything. It plays DVDs, it plays CDs, it burns and rips CDs, it reads data CDs, it reads MP3 CDs, it reads normal CDs, it installs programs. I'm going to try another brand of DVD before I decide that it's no good for burning. Since it's still good for everything else.
