Hey, my PS2 has recently stopped working and it's starting to annoy me. It's been messing up for awhile actually. For the past couple of months, I had to keep turning on and off my PS2 for it to actually read the disc inside. I don't know what's wrong with it. Maybe my PS2 is just deteriorating or maybe the laser needs changing.

Has anyone else had similar problems with there Playstation 2's, and if so, what should I do?

Older PS2's suffer from something that is referred to as the "Disc Read Error". A common suggestion is to try putting a 1 inch piece of tape on both sides of the hole on the GRAPHIC side of the disc. Sometimes the cd spins too fast to be gripped and putting tape on both sides of the hole on the graphic side (sticky side down not facing up obviously) can help the PS2 grip the cd better

If that doesnt work, make sure your PS2 isn't extremely dusty as a large accumulation of dust inside and outside of the PS2 can cause it to not play correctly or in the worst case, malfunction.

Make sure the CD's you put in are clean and free of scratches and lastly, if all those precautions don't fix anything, you may have to send your PS2 into Sony to get it repaired, but be ready to not see your beloved system for a few weeks.

Also, blue discs (MUCH OLDER ones that arent clear underneath) have been known to not work correctly with PS2's because they were not DVD-ROM's.

Thanks, I'll try it. And the game I'm having problems with is NHL 2004. It's not blue.

Wait, you're not having problems with any other games? If so, than it's probably the game that's messed up.

Might be the laser. I know a few people who's ps2 laser's have crapped out on them. Does the game boot, because what would happen would be that the game would boot, but it would freeze because it couldnt read the game data... he had to get a new ps2.

Try looking around for little known gaming shops, as they will repair for cheaper if need be.

    Yeah, thanks.

I'vegot it working for now. I won't be turning off the PS2 for awhile now because I want to play the game as longas I can without having to go through the torture of getting it to work again. Next time, I'm bringing it to an electronics store. Thanks everyone, it's resolved for now.
