Honestly, Overflow is the song I always needed Linkin Park to make, but wasn't fully aware of it. It has the essence of so much of the stuff I loved in my 20's.
Mike's vocal delivery is probably the most unique he ever did (beside Causalty but I prefer this way more). Definitely wish to hear most stuff like this.
In may ways this is my favourite song in the album. Love the experimental production and spacey soundscape. I just wish the guitar part towards the last leg was a bit more creative, it sounds very repetitive. I'd love for LP to explore songs with this vibe in the future.
Mike’s vocals are reminiscent of his solo work in the last 6 years. Like Casualty, was cool but definitely not my favorite delivery from him. However, it’s a fun track and offers something new. The instrumental is gorgeous with the spacey production. I don’t know if it’ll ever be a top track for me but it’s certainly not a skip when it comes on shuffle.
Probably my favorite on the album, but only time will tell. It's like a blend of the more moody Post Traumatic songs (Promises i can't keep/Brooding and Lift Off) and A thousand Suns (somewhere between Robot Boy and Blackout). I love it
I feel Mike is taking the piss with us with the line "I can hear the future Colin". This means that he is admitting to Colin he can hear how us fans will react to the music and thus, they only release good music. I've always wondered how they did it! Sneaky buggers.
The way Emily voice get into those long raspy vocals at the end, with the ton of effects and production work going around that, reminds me so much of Reanimation. It is also one of the moments on the album where I can almost hear Chester vocals. It is so familiar, somehow.
I like Overflow the most because it aligns the most with my music taste nowadays, I don't like any bands that people consider similar to LP like BMTH and Evanescence or whatever, I think that whole scene is shite and boring. LP are the exception for me because I grew up with them and they experimented and branched out as my tastes changed and Chester was unmatched. I prefer stuff like Radiohead, Massive Attack. Aphex Twin and Bjork, just vibey experimental shit, ATS made me seek out all that because someone called it Linkin Park's Kid A and I was like "hmmm I like ATS, what's Kid A?" And then I thought Kid A was the coolest thing I ever heard. I still love Hybrid Theory though. Overflow has those cool I love vibes all over, so it instantly clicked with me. LP, give me more moody vibes that I can listen to while brooding like Batman, looking out of a top floor hotel room window as it rains outside
That BMTH slander though It's a really cool band tbh, that has had the merit of trying many different things over the year - they even had a full on experimental electronic project. It has some LP DNA in their love for big catchy choruses. All the other stuff you mentioned (Aphex, Radiohead, Massive, Björk) I love it too. It's very different from the BMTH scene for sure. Think Overflow is definitely going more that road, which is real nice.
