Not sure how many people on this board are fans of these guys, but I've been following them since they released Blackwater Park back in the early 2000's and the new album is absolutely amazing.

Gone are the death metal growls and replaced by nothing but clean vocals over what can only be described as an ode to 70's obscure prog rock.

Here's a tidbit of what one would expect from said album.

Yeah, I've been following them about 2 years now, big fan.

Heritage is fecking brilliant. Fantastic instrumentation, beautiful vocals. I'm not bothered at all that there's no growling, it's not like they've never written a song or album without it before.

    Lyrically it's miserable.

Not quality wise, but Mikael said himself that the album was written to state that in the end we're all alone in this world.

I've generally found him to be pretty average lyrically throughout their albums. The quality of the music really overshadows that though, so I don't mind.

His clean vocals are probably the most unemotional and boring I've ever heard. I'll just listen to King Crimson instead I think.

My friends have been raving about this and the new Mastodon album. I've never been a fan of either. Maybe it's time I give it a try.

    I love it. So there.

EDIT: the half way point of Famine turns completely into Jethro Tull. lol.

I always hated the "harsher" moments of Opeth, always thought material like "Damnation" were vastly superior, so this sounds right up my alley. I'll give it a listen soon.

I love it. It took me a few listens to get used to the new sound, but it grew on me and I think it's fantastic.

The doomy riff with the flute on Famine it's probably the best moment in the album.

And a special mention goes to Martin Mendez's playing in this album, his bass lines are probably the best I've heard from him.

    This album is fucking horrible.

I get that they were going for a new style since all of their songs sound exactly the same (you know it's true), but it is a heaping pile of shit.

Reading that part makes me dissagree with everything else you wrote.

I listened to the entire album a few days ago and I honestly can't tell you what I even thought about it. It was background music. I think that's saying something. Or maybe I was high, who knows. I'll give it another listen, but on a slightly related note: EVERYONE LISTEN TO STEVEN WILSON'S NEW ALBUM, "GRACE FOR DROWNING".

    Album of the goddamn Year.
