At least according to Roger Daltry there isn't: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/02/roger-daltrey-the-who-lead-singers_n_991008.html Discuss. Do you agree or strongly disagree?
I've been on a Gavin Rossdale kick lately (solo work, Bush, Institute) and he definitely has a distinguishable voice.
Clearly he hasn't been looking hard enough. There's plenty of very well-talented vocalists out there.
Dustin Kensrue Anthony Green Jesse Lacey His argument is invalid. No good frontmen? Debatable, but I've never been one to enjoy some attention whoring douchebag trying to garner credibility doing anything other than singing.
I do agree that distinguishable voices are growing thin. Especially in the pop scene. They might be good but they're also dime a dozen. I hate American Idol because all the winners are just dime a dozen singers. There was the kid who liked heavy metal last season but of course he got booted. However I feel like in rock/metal they're are a good number of great singers. Chester Bennington, Serj Tankian, Corey taylor, Jonathan Davis, Gavin Rossdale, Jared Leto, Dave Grohl, the dude from Muse, Tim mcilrath, Adam Gontier, that other dude from hoobastank, Amy Lee, the chick from flyleaf, (I'm not sure he fits into the modern theme I'm going for but what the hell) Trent Reznor. I'll stop now, I think I've made my point
This is literally the same as old people saying their generation of music was so much better and every music today sucks. People like them need to open up because there is good music today. I'm not saying Ke$ha and Justin Bieber are good music, but there's still great music that you can find. As much as I respect the Who, I find this as a joke.
I just looked at my top 10 albums for the year so far and I would say the vocalist on each one has a distinct voice, so no. I barely agree at all as far as music as a whole is concerned. When it comes to the sorts of singers who generally do well on shows like American Idol and The X-Factor I can see where he's coming from though, and that seems to be the main part of what he's saying.
He's trying to invoke people's rose colored glasses, and not aware that he's wearing them himself. Lamesauce. EDIT: dammit, i should read entire thread before posting.
ya, I can see that he's not just pulling this out of his ass. There does seem to be an issue of dime a dozen sound a like singers but there are a lot of great distinguished singers out there. Clearly he's not looking very hard
The whole idea around this thread is bullshit. Yes there are some singers that kill bands for me, however, to group every band that's out is quite disrespectful. It's important to note that each band is different. There are a lot of really good singers and there are a lot of really good singers to their respectable band. For example, I don't consider Matt Shadows the best singer ever of all time, but his voice compliments his band and I can't see any other singer that someone thinks is a good singer be as effective with their voice to Avenged Sevenfold as Matt. Not every band should have an American Idol as their lead singer, because I dig stuff that's different. If every band had some American Idol, that sounds like a really jaded view of what 'good music' is.
He's an idiot. Scott Weiland, Chester Bennington, Trent Reznor, Dave MUTHAFUCKING Grohl, Serj Tankian, Matt Bellamy, Billy Corgan... All incredible, individual sounding singers who are going to be remembered for some time yet.
