Wii, Revolution, whatever. It's still the best thing to happen to gaming in a long time.

    ...But the name is strange.

I posted it over at LPU, and I'll post it here:

"I'm gonna go play with my Wii!"
"Bring your Wii with you when you come over tonight."
"Can I play that with my Wii?"
"Will my Wii fit in there?"

    Way to go Nintendo.

Sounds more like it should be pernounced "Why".

Which happens to be the exact question I am asking: Why?!

!! So wrong, yet so, so true. An god. Why couldn't they just leave it as Revolution? Nintendo Revolution fits. Not Nintendo Wii.

I don't mind the name at all. It just doesn't fit a console, to me. Xbox, Playstation, Wii? It's awkward and uncomfortable to say in the context of a conversation. I believe the name would fit better on a device or something. Nintendo has been very basic on naming their consoles from the beginning and this doesn't seem to fit. But, at the end of the day, who cares what the name is? It's not the name that determines if it's a great console. It's just a key part of the marketing. Plus, who knows if this will be another Virtual Boy? Either way, I cannot wait to experience Wii for the first time.

They should have kept it "Revolution." In my opinion, considering they have such a "revolutionary" new controller, the name would have fit well. Wii doesn't seem to have the same effect as Revolution. I mean, it sounds very kiddy to me, and though Nintendo's target audience is usually the younger age group, it'd be fine, but in my opinion "Revolution" would have expanded the brand to the older gamers in the sense they're not turning a blind eye again at the console for it's name/reputation.

Prime example would be us veteran gamers. When we say we played the "NES" and "SNES" growing up, we can say it because it doesn't sound like we're saying something weird. I believe boasting that you grew up playing with your "Wii" has no real... Well, pride to it, lol.

In this day and age, it doesn't only revolve around a console's performance. The presentation of a console has skyrocketted into new waves ever since Xbox hit and drove the next-generation expectations way off the radar. Nowadays it's all about marketing and all that jazz, and if you don't appeal correctly, you won't get what you're after. That's what happened to the Dreamcast. The console name and performance was far from the Playstation at the time before the PS2 came out, and yet it failed. Probably because Sega went downhill during the Nintendo vs. Sega time, so reputation-wise, Sega's NAME was damaged. As soon as the Playstation (a brand known by it's NAME mostly at the time), overpowered the Dreamcast despite the Dreamcast having what an early PS2 development kit probably had.

Anyways, I think the bottom line is that thanks to large corporations putting so much pressure on the gaming industry now, our expectations have been raised to a whole new level. Someone like myself finds it weird that Nintendo would go in such a direction when the name "Revolution" was so solid. I loved the name when it was first used to describe Nintendo's next generation console, and I probably will always like it. I can't say I'll be telling anyone I'm going to spend a buttload of my cash on a brand new "Wii" anytime soon.

    I agree with Keaton 100%

Maybe they will still keep and make use of the word 'revolution'. Possibly as a part of the marketing campaign, they will have a line/quote based on something like "Wii - The gaming revolution"

Revolution was a far superior "codename" than Dolphin and Ultra 64.

I'll just keep referring to it as the Revolution. I reject your reality and substitute my own, Nintendo!

Indeed, but will the majority of gamers think that? I don't think anyone is anticipating it more now its called "Wii". Quite the opposite, it will turn alot of consumers off I think. Nintendo claim it has worldwide relevance...how about checking some worldwide languages before naming a console "Wii".

Mark my words, this will be Nintendo's last home video games console, they will be dead in the water after "Wii" falls flat.

    I think it's fine.

Honestly... 360, Wii... neither of them are great -- it's not going to stop people from buying the consoles.
