I thought it'd be cool to have a mini pool for the NHL playoffs, considering we have a decent amount of hockey fans here. The contest will operate on a points system. You'll be asked to predict the winner of each playoff series, along with the number of games you believe it will take for them to win the seven game series. You get one point for a correct team prediction, and two points extra (for a possible 3 points) in you predict the amount of games correctly. The eight series; Western Conference (1) Detroit Red Wings vs. (8) Edmonton Oilers (2) Dallas Stars vs. (7) Colorado Avalanche (3) Calgary Flames vs. (6) Anaheim Mighty Ducks (4) Nashville Predators vs. (5) San Jose Sharks Eastern Conference (1) Ottawa Senators vs. (8) Tampa Bay Lightning (2) Carolina Hurricanes vs. (7) Montreal Canadiens (3) New Jersey Devils vs. (6) New York Rangers (4) Buffalo Sabres vs. (5) Philadelphia Flyers Post your predictions in here before Friday nights games. Detroit in 6 Dallas in 4 Calgary in 7 San Jose in 5 Ottawa in 5 Carolina in 6 New Jersey in 5 Buffalo in 6
I dont understand the stupid numbers. Its not my fault im English, but I like ice hockey and I follow New Jersey Devils. So I'd say them to win the play offs. (anyone care to explain the way that the positions work?)
Edmonton 7 Dallas 5 Calgary 6 San Jose 6 Ottawa 4 Carolina 5 New York 7 Buffalo 7 Don't give me shit about Edmonton, it could happen!
The numbers are the team's ranks in their conferences. There's two conferences where the top 8 teams in each conference gain entry into the playoffs. From there, the first seed plays the eight seed, the second seed plays the seventh seed, and so on and so forth. Each series is a best of seven where in order for a team to advance, they have to win 4.
Detroit in 6 Colorado in 7 Calgary in 6 Nashville in 5 Ottawa in 6 Carolina in 4 New York in 7 Buffalo in 6
Detroit in 5 Dallas in 4 Calgary in 6 San Jose in 7 Ottawa in 5 Carolina in 6 New York in 7 Philadelphia in 6
Ok thanks Mark, I get the first stage, team rank 1 plays team rank 8 and so on, they play best of 7... Then they advance, but do they have another draw, or does top play bottom again...and what are the OH hold on, I finally get it... So everyones saying, for example Friskey, that Buffalo will win the best of 7 in 6 matches. ok, sorry for all the confusion, but thanks, I understand now... From my limited Ice Hockey knowledge: Detroit in 5 Colorado in 6 Calgary in 7 San Jose in 6 Ottawa in 4 Carrolina in 5 New Jersey in 6 Philadelphia in 7
Detroit in 5 Dallas in 5 Calgary in 6 Nashville in 5 Ottawa in 5 Carolina in 6 New Jersey in 7 Buffalo in 5
Detroit in 6 Dallas in 6 Calgary in 5 San Jose in 6 Ottawa in 5 Carolina in 6 New York in 7 Buffalo in 5
Detroit in 5 Dallas in 6 Anaheim in 7 San Jose in 6 Ottawa in 5 Carolina in 7 New Jersey in 6 Buffalo in 6
Dangit... my picks aren't doing so hot. I knew I should have picked some different teams (like the Devils and Sabres, since they were hot)... dang.
Ehh, it's only one game in. Anything is possible. Philly totally outplayed Buffalo in overtime, and they never lose at home, so I wouldn't count them out. But New York is screwed if Jagr is hurt.
NHL Playoffs Pool/Discussion Thread http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fkp9qv15dA&search=umberger I saw this hit happen live today. WOW. Talk about a suicide pass. Poor Umberger did not see it coming for an instant. Shades of the Scott Stevens check on Kariya a few years ago. Basically, a Philadelphia player receives a pass in mid-ice and before he can take two strides and look up the ice, he is absolutely THRASHED by a Buffalo defenceman. Even if you aren't a hockey fan, you'll appreciate this. The announcer's reaction is something to look out for, along with the crowd's uproar. Absolutely vicious. The best thing is that it was a clean hit. Don Cherry would be proud. Would you believe Umberger is fine and was walking around after the game? He must have a concussion. You could see his eyes roll up in his head when he was on the ice! (Here's the Kariya hit for those of you who haven't seen that either; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYqNXH35IXY&search=kariya)
Yah this hit was fucking crazy. I almost feel sorry for RJ but it was a clean hit. Unlike the Kariya, RJ actually had the puck whereas Kariya jsut dished it off.
Damn I didn't expect Colorado to play like this in the playoffs. Already predicted the games in that series wrong.
Yeah, I made a seperate thread about it with a clip, but it got no recognition. so I'll merge it. Edit: Done. Don't mind mine and Ryan's double posts.
