Alright. Here's the deal. I got a laptop a month ago, and just in the last week or so bought a wireless router for it. Now, I know absolutely nothing about networking and such whatsoever. I just followed the instructions with the router and it worked. But, the problem is that now, I can't download anything. For me, this is a huge problem. Now, when I use Azureus (BitTorrent), the download either goes insanely slow (124/bps or so), or doesn't work at all. Ares doesn't even connect. Everything else works fine, however, such as AIM, MSN Messenger, Firefox, and anything that uses the internet. Mind you, this problem is on the main computer that I've been using for the past year and a half, not the laptop. On Azureus help thing, it said something about MAC Addresses or something, and I looked at the Wiki for changing it, and I haven't got a clue what to do. So yeah. I need some help, badly. The router is made by Netgear, and I have the username and password to get to the settings if I have to. The way that I have it set up is: Cable connection > Wireless router > Computer/Laptop
Betcha the hardware firewall on the router is enabled. You should be able to kill the firewall from the router setup wizard/program/whatever it is That should stop what's going on. Also bear in mind that a router WILL slow you down a bit, especially when you're using all your available bandwidth. The added switching, and especially broadcasting and working through a wireless signal, will create some lag. But yeah, sounds like the hardware firewall needs to be turned off.

If you did a search, you would find my topic. Go into your router control panel, find where the port forwarding settings are, and forward the ports specified in the program's settings.
Again, this is another dumb question, but whatever. What port do I want to forward to? [/b][/quote] You wanna forward to the computer's IP address. Or you could create a new PPpoE connection and set the router to be a bridge.
WELL. It's come back folks. It was all well for about a month, and then it's started again in the past few days. I tried to re-do what I did before, but it didn't work. Any new suggestions?
I just did. I switched over to LimeWire and uninstalled Ares. But the Azureus/Torrent thing is the main problem.
And you want to stop using Azuerus also. uTorrent is the way to go. First of all, you find out the port the program is using. You also need to find out the local IP address of your computer [start > run > 'cmd' > 'ipconfig' > 192.168.?.? usually] then you go into your router control panel [open up firefox/ie > 192.168.1.1 (that's what linksys uses, unsure for netgear)] and then find the port forwarding settings. There should be two spaces for ports, enter the port your program specified in both spaces [my linksys router labels this as start/end], protocol should be set to both, and ip address should be the ip of your computer [found using ipconfig].
ahh, okay. Problem's fixed. I forgot to check my IP last time I did it, and apprently it had changed from .2 to .3. Okay, seems everything's good now, thanks.
Have you switched to uTorrent? Your computer will thank you, it uses the least resource than any other bittorrent client.
Does it have a torrent-making feature? A very easy one that a simpleton like I can understand? Branden enjoys making torrents. It makes him fuzzy inside.
