I'm using Mozilla Firefox, like, the version before the new beta one - which I don't like - and, last night, it just couldn't get onto Gmail at all. And nothing's changed. I've uninstalled it, re-installed it, restarted my computer, reset my modem ... with that being said, the beta copy (which I installed briefly) couldn't get into Gmail either. I can get into Google and access all the links there except Gmail. This is not a problem with the notifier or the site, 'cause I typed the address into Firefox's address bar and still couldn't get in. This is a problem with the browser, 'cause I could get in fine with Internet Explorer. EDIT: Basically, there are a number of sites I frequent which I suddenly cannot visit ... and IE's starting to cop some as well. I'm thinking it's either something that's been left on my computer (in which case, I've checked everywhere I know and a scan is in progress) -- my IE can get onto Gmail while my Firefox can't. But, other than that, IE is being shot down on all the same sites. EDIT: Okay, I've gotten somewhere. I can get into Gmail on both IE and Firefox now. After I put in my username and password, it can't get into the inbox but I can insert "https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox" into the address bar and it'll get me in. That's just one site. I can't get onto Hotmail, Yahoo! or MySpace or Facebook, and I can use all Google search functions except the main one and images - that's all I know so far. Every other site is fine at the moment, albeit they're all loading a lot slower than they did before ... EDIT: I wiped the Vundo trojan from my computer and the only thing that achieved was getting me to the MySpace login page; I still cannot access the control panel. But I can see my profile; all or most pages load incredibly slowly now. Other than MySpace and Gmail now, then, the problem still exists and I was hoping removing the Vundo trojan (whose symptoms matched my case) would fix everything ... EDIT: It seems that removing the trojan have started to take its effect, 'cause I've just gotten home from some shopping and everything worked again. Save for Hotmail, I still can't get on that. But that doesn't matter, I hate Hotmail. Ha. EDIT: Okay, the problem is back. Every bit of it. EDIT: So ... I think I've killed it off. Just waiting for some scans to finish up so I can see for sure. Hope and pray everything's going to be okay ...
Wait, what? Please give us the version number. I believe the FF3 betas were having problems accessing gmail and hotmail, but I have heard that has been fixed in the latest v3RC1.
It turned out to be the Vundo trojan and I killed it off last night. Everything's fine. EDIT: Well, hang on - it actually keeps coming back; clearly, there are files I haven't found to delete. But, still, I can keep it at bay for quite a while at a time ...
Alright, this thing is a b*tch. It comes back at the exact same time every day and it's annoying me bad.
Boot into safe mode, disable your connection to the internet, run your scanners, eliminate the problem, boot into normal mode. Should do the trick.
My scanners only find the the infected DLL's and some registry entries - and I always delete those. Clearly, that's not all there is to it. I've been meaning to do that, I just don't know how.
I can't remember if it'll clear the checkpoints as soon as you disable it or if you have to restart first. I'd restart anyway. Then you can re-enable it, as soon as you know the virus is gone. Although, the virus might not even be there, it's just a hunch.
I'm just hoping to not see the trojan return at its usual time in the day, that'll mean I did something right.
You ran an scan after turning off system restore, right? Another thing you can do is go to start > run > 'msconfig' > startup > then go through that list to make sure nothing odd is starting up. Google is useful.
The trojan has either changed its schedule (or I've somehow inadvertently changed it myself without realising it) or I've actually managed to kill it off somehow 'cause it's 6:30 PM now, the time when it usually comes back ... and it's not back. Here's to hoping this isn't false hope. Anyway, I have several audio files which are suspected culprits in bringing the trojan onto my computer on a USB. I think even the slightest exposure of those files to my computer would bring the trojan back -- but is there anything I can do about the file, if indeed any of the ones I suspect are responsible? EDIT: I was wrong -- it's back.
I think a HijackThis log would be helpful right now. http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html?cdlPid=10781312 Download that, install it, then run it, and post a log here.
Wow, it's been a few weeks since I used HijackThis! - yeah, it's just I can't understand the logs unless I know exactly what I'm looking for.
Yeah, I know. I didn't mean I wouldn't post them, though. Albeit I ended up forgetting altogether. Okay, so I wiped the infection out with Spyware Doctor yesterday, just waiting today to see whether new infected DLL's and whatnot appear again. If they don't appear - they usually appear at approx. 7:20 PM - then I'm clear, I guess. EDIT: I conclude that the trojan is gone.
