Definitely a unique band with a very unique sound. I've loved them since I saw them open for MCR back in 2007, way before they got famous and everybody else starting loving them. What do you think of Muse?
Oh goodness. I've been waiting for this thread. Wait, let me get my Formspring response! Muse is my favorite band of all time, and I'll tell you why. One of the qualities of music that I truly enjoy is when the music is exciting and gives you goosebumps. When there's some sort of volume, dynamic, or emotion that swells up and rubs you in the right way, it's an incredible feeling. I've felt that way more often with Muse's music than I have with any other band's music. That's not to say that other bands haven't accomplished giving me that feeling. Muse, however, does it on a regular basis. I still get goosebumps listening to the Exogenesis Symphony, and I've listened to it over 70 times in its entirety. That's only three pieces of their entire discography. Muse is very over-the-top. We all take over-the-top in different ways. I, personally, love over-the-top music. I love the ridiculousness of it, and ridiculous in this sense is by no means a bad thing. There's so much more to the music that way. I love the complexity in their music. I love how every time you listen to one of their songs, you hear something new. I've listened to Uprising maybe 200 times and I still find new little interesting sounds when I make the effort to truly focus in on it. And yet, when all of those sounds come together, you can get something pretty damn incredible. Songs like Butterflies and Hurricanes, Knights of Cydonia, Exogenesis...those songs exemplify the tremendous over-the-top sound that comes from balanced and extensive complexity. And that's just the overall musical sound. There are plenty of specifics that I love too. I love Muse's lyrics. I love how ridiculous they are, how anti-New World Order they've become recently. I love how they can incite feelings that no other song would make you feel. I know of no other song that pumps me up like Uprising does. I also love the certain traits of their songs that they're known for. The infamous arpeggios, the increasing volume as the song goes on (Uprising, Take a Bow...all get louder from beginning to end)...those things never get old. I guess what it really is about Muse is that their music can be extremely captivating. Don't get me wrong, I can really enjoy music like Two Door Cinema Club where you can just sorta listen to it and do whatever else and have a good time. I can appreciate that sorta chill music. However, I love being captivated. When a Muse song comes on, it's as if I'm pulled in. It can be any Muse song, too, even something as mainstream as Starlight. I just have to listen to it. Their B-Sides are like that too. You have to listen. Muse makes every song unique. Sure, there are some of those defining traits, but it's not like Coldplay that, as much as I love them, will repeat a song structure almost the exact same and change the notes / lyrics and call it a new song (Clocks / Speed of Sound). Muse can use the same techniques but apply them in unique and different ways, ultimately changing the structure and nature of the song. Muse does that better than most bands, where they will stick to something they're good at / comfortable with and make sure you can tell they're sticking to it. With Muse, it's not as obvious, and yet when you realize it, you're not mad; you appreciate it. So yeah, that's just a little bit of how in depth I can go into why I love Muse. They're a fantastic band, but I acknowledge that they're just not for some people. That's okay with me. We all have that one band that makes us happy no matter what. For me, that band is Muse. And the last thing about Muse that really takes over any band: They have an amazing live show. Actually, they have the best live show. Every year they get best live act at some sort of awards show, every show is consistent and fun...and when I went my life changed forever. They are incredible, and even if you don't like the music as much...seeing them would be quite the experience for you. That's all! <3 Muse
I like them a lot. Absolution is a masterpiece. They are all great musicians, and Matt Bellamy is a great singer and an amazing guitar player. I wasn't really very hooked by The Resistance though. I'll always regret the fact I started listening to them a few months after the show they did here
In the UK of course. I'm talking about America. Nobody knew who they were, and then Uprising hit the radio and America went crazy for it.
Muse is Awesome, but in my opinion, is The Resistance alittle overrated, but a nice band overall ....Lol.. Matt Bellamy beat by a kid
Love this band, and I've also managed to get tickets to see them in about 3 weeks in Manchester (which I'm ridiculously excited about). Saying that though, I thought 'The Resistance' was fucking terrible, bar a few songs.
The songs I've heard from Resistance are up their with the worst music I've been exposed to in a while, but I'm kidding myself if I don't say that Origin Of Symmetry had some fucking great tracks. Matt Bellamy pissed me off a bit with his anti-piracy stance he took (earlier this year? maybe last year?), but I don't really care much anymore. The rest of this post is me being elitist blah blah blah.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? I heard Time is Running Out on the radio here in '04 and fell in love with it instantly. heck MTV played the video and they don't even play music anymore. then again, i think the radio had a really spiffy DJ. I think he was a LPUer.
Tr00f. Aside from a handful of songs on Black Holes and Revelations, I don't care for post-Absolution Muse -- way too cheesy for my tastes.
Origin of Symmetry > Absolution > [insert their painfully average albums here] They had some pretty big hits from Absolution on out. I've heard less of Uprising than I have their previous (post-Origin) singles.
In summary Showbiz: Has its moments. Origin of Symmetry: Their first great album. Absolution: The second. Black Holes and Revelations: Just sort of pretty good all the way through without being that great for the most part, but not bad by any means either. Uprising: A bit wishy-washy, some really good tracks, some okay/average ones and a couple that I would say are Muse at their worst.
Not a Muse fan. Nothing about their music is appealing to me. I don't know why. It's all boring to me
Quality of their albums notwithstanding, I think most of us can agree that Muse sound incredible live (I've never seen them in person, though).
I'm going to be completely honest, and say that I have never cared for Muse. I'm not saying they are bad or anything, but the constant high pitched Falsetto annoys me, and I never really understood why they got so famous. *ducks 4 teh flamez!*
I love Muse really - while 80% of the post-Absolution stuff is "meh" to me I'm seeing them live in October and based on what I've heard, they won't disappoint. Absolutely can't wait for that.
Showbiz - Not a bad start. There's some decent stuff on there, but nothing amazing. Origin of Symmetry - Figuring out their sound, some really great songs on there (New Born, Bliss, Plug-In Baby, Citizen Erased, etc.) Absolution - Their most solid album and arguably their best, an album with a concept without having some of the traits a concept album would have (all the songs are different but they all surround an apocalyptical and remorseful concept) Black Holes and Revelations - Not *as* solid, but definitely has some high points of Muse's career so far. Take a Bow and Knights of Cydonia are fucking incredible, and I also enjoy Map of the Problematique and City of Delusion. The Resistance - An excellent concept album (similar to the nature of Absolution) that completely encompasses the spectrum of emotions of The Resistance. Overall, not their best (I'm not the biggest fan of Guiding Light, and I don't like the middle section of Unnatural Selection), but it provides some of their best songs to date (MK Ultra, Exogenesis Symphony, but I also really love Uprising). I dno, I really love them. I think the people who don't like 'em haven't listened to their development over the years, so you can't really appreciate how diverse they are in terms of their music on each album. That's just me, though. I know some people just don't enjoy the voice and how over-the-top some of the music is.
