Does anyone know a program that will allow me to strip the vocals from an MP3 or WAV file and save them as a separate file to overlay on another MP3 or WAV? No, I don't have all the source files or anything, I'm just wondering if there's an easy way to do this without big-budget software or something.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

Doesn't that cost quite a bit of money, though? Do you know of any alternative solutions that are either cheaper or shareware so I can try before I pluck down my money (other than something $100+)?

There's a free plug-in you can download for Winamp. I don't remember what it's called though. You might want to try searching winamp.com.

Can you save the vocals and overlay them over another track?

No but there's little point in doing any of this anyway. Any mixer will tell you how awful the sound comes out when you strip the vocals in this way.
If you really want to then i'll direct you to the previous suggestion of Adobe Audition and also direct you to the words "Bit torrent"

lol, OK, I just did that, but I can't find an option to strip the vocals and save them separately to overlay them on another file... does anyone else have the program and know how?

Yeah, the only way to get a perfect instrumental from a song with vocals is if you have the original master recordings themselves. All vocal removal programs basically operate on one concept: lead vocals are typically dead center in the mix of a song, not panned left or right any. Guitar tracks are usually doubled on the left and right channels and remain untouched, but cutting vocals also almost always cuts out all the bass as well and screws with a lot of the drums.

This is what you do, you go ovcal remove, then you get an ok instrumental. Save the INstrumental. Then Import the instrumental and the origianal untouched song. Invert the instrumental so all the peaks become valleys, and place it right under the origianal so they play at the same time. THe inverted instrumental cuts out the instrumental of the untouched song, giving you just the vocals.
