The MP3 thing has been down on this site for a long time. I was wondering if any of the admins could use help getting it back up or if there is anything we could do to help about it.

    1. Get a really fast internet connection (upload wise)
    2. Install FTP software (like Bulletproof FTP) on your PC
    3. Leave your computer on.. :shifty: FOREVER!!

To get the MP3s up takes a WHOLE lot of space and transfer.

It's almost impossible to find a server that can handle such a job without paying a lot, though.

Keaton's right...and now, especially with the SparkArt hosted sites, even they can't host mp3's anymore... (Pushmeaway.com and thelinkinsix.com (which is now closed)). It's just sad. But bandwidth costs are just too steep now-a-days.

LPA pushes about 45GB of bandwidth a month so MP3s at the moment would be crazy.

We'd need a 3rd party to host them... which isnt easy to find :(

Thats bigger than one of my hard drives, and would multiply infinitely if there were no way to prevent people who dont even appreciate the site from downloading (ie, leechers).

I think you should do what Blink-182 Online did. Make a channel on IRC where you can get music off certain people :chemist:

You'd have to go for something a bit more userfriendly when goign p2p, and IRC simply doesn't cut it for those completely unfamilair with it, and even those relatively familair with it.

I've actually seen .fla files floating around on a few flash resource websites, that through the use of the forum member db, you can create a flash based file transferring program, exclusive to the LPA. But of course, this opens the gateway for people to start transferring files other than those legal copies of mp3's the LPA originally intended to have up for download.

But with the constant amount of users online here at the LPA, I doubt it would be hard not to find your favorite LP song you wanted to download, so the idea is pretty tangible. It also needs no bandwidth, other than .swf file itself, and the connection you're making to the forum db, which I don't think means any at all? I don't know, don't quote me on that.

    But what y'all think?

I'm wondering. How much would it cost each month to have those mp3s up?

I assume somewhere in the hundreds. And that'd probably be per month.

Perhaps instead of trying to host all the mp3s, why not try and do like an "Mp3 of the week" or something? It wouldn't use nearly as much space or bandwidth right? Just an idea, I don't know any of the specifics though.

Although that would be a good idea, it can backfire on us or anyone that tries it. I remember doing a "song of the week" download once, and I have visitors come to me and complain that I should put the song back up because they didn't get to download it (not on this site, mind you). I don't know if the LPA will go through the same thing or wants to, but that'd be a good idea if people weren't so greedy and demanding .
