. Probably one of the greatest and most overlooked game series of all time, Shigesato Itoi's Mother is a tale of us. The story of how humanity, the children of Earth, bound to a rock floating in space, fights for Mother. Mother Earth. Known to north Americans as the EarthBound series, Mother is a testament to the power of storytelling, and it's everlasting effect on it's listeners. A series that plays with our human emotions and keeps us following until the very end, Mother started out as an idea pitched to Shigeru Miyamoto, who initally rejected it. Mother was considered by Nintendo though, and the first game was developed for the Famicom and released on July 27, 1989. It's Super Famicom sequel, Mother 2 was developed with the assistance of the now-famous HAL Laboratories, led by Satoru Iwata, who would later become president of Nintendo. It came out on August 27, 1994. It was then translated into English under the title EarthBound, and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System on June 5, 1995, but unfortunately due to it's infamously poor advertising campaign and a lack of promotion, the game failed to sell outside of Japan. Mother 3, originally planned for release on the Nintendo 64 and under a North American EarthBound 64 name, was released in Japan on April 20, 2006 on the Game Boy Advance as the third and final installment in the Mother series. Unfortunately, there are no plans to localise the entire Mother series worldwide, nor are there to continue the franchise, but it's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who have played the games. For us, and for Itoi, life as we know it, is Mother 4. Mother Mother 2 (EarthBound) Mother 3
Earthbound is one of my favorite RPGs. Mother 3 was just average to me. I can't remember if I played Mother ever.
Jesse yes! Wii U is such a great console, really liking Nintendoland, Mother would work well on here.
Earthbound is one of the best RPG's ever made. Anyone who hasn't played it, I recommend you get a ROM; it's worth it (the real carts are worth way, way more than the HTEP, unfortunately). I started "Earthbound Zero" (Mother 1) last month. I forgot. What gets me is that they still have this idea that its not worth it to port over to the English speaking world. Now the series has a really large, VERY successful ad campaign that spotlights the series with the intensity of the sun, called "Super Smash Bros," and it's baffling to think that another release would tank like Earthbound did. Aaaaaaaargh. EDIT: If I recall correctly, there is a licensed music problem with the games that make them scared to rerelease them. I would say screw it and just change the music already.
