    MC :

    1) v :act as a master of ceremonies

    2) n :a person who acts as host at formal occasions (makes an introductory speech and introduces other speakers)

As for how we use it now, it comes from the first definition...

"MC" stands for "master of ceremonies."

In music, it's the rapper of a certain group.

    Yup, master of ceremonies! :D
I don't think it was a dumb question, most people probably wouldn't know that.

also it's probably the guy who does most of the: " put your hands up in the air!" during the live shows, which is what Mike is.

I've always spelled it "emcee." That's probably because I'm not lazy like people who spell it "MC."

MC is usually used when it's a formal occassion, and emcee is used in other terms, as it's used as a term for rapper.

lol, There's really no wrong way to use it, but I've noticed it to be that way. I've gone to a few public things where the announcer (or the one introducing things, explaining things, etc.) was referred to as the "MC", and then I've noticed rappers labeling themselves as "emcee"--as Mike Shinoda does in "Step Up".
