Post here about your experiences in martial arts, you sudden interest, or just chat if want to learn more about it.

I've been a black belt in Taekwondo since last summer, going on 5 years now. (I quit my school because we had a new instructor and wanted me to learn different forms in different variations all over again, while raising prices on all products sold their and tuition fees.) I'm still training individual, me with my little brother, and every once in awhile a couple of friends would spar or do forms with me in unison.

Karate is a form of martial arts and I am a first degree black belt (before I quit ). I'd been taking Karate for I'd say about 7-8 years. I started when I was two, but I wasn't into it until about seven or so. I had to eventually quit because of too many things going on in my life, though.

I took taekwondo for 5 years, then asked my instructor, to teach me hopketo[sp?] and street fighting, now for half a year I have been doing all three, and am going for my black belt at the end of this month. I missed two tests do to sickness and being gone, so I should be a black belt, but sadly not :( I am not looking forward to the test though, we have to do a bull ring, which is people stand around in a circle, then they all are given a number, while you are still in the middle-then the teacher calls out various numbers, and whosever number he called out, they attack, then go back to the circle. So you got to watch from all sides because you will be attacked from back and front and all around  I will be walking a shorter man

    ^^^ hapkido :p

I'm big into martial arts. Been enjoying every (well almost every :D ) moment of it for I guess 11 years now. I started when I was 6 in Tae Kwon Do, reached 1st Degree Black Belt, when I was getting close to be able to test for 2nd Degree the school I was practicing at closed. I then started up Soo Bahk Do, and reached my 1st Dan (Blackbelt/midnightblue) last November. Last June I also started taking Jujutsu, which is just awesome. Kinda tough juggling two arts at the same time though. I'm interested in looking into hapkido as well.

    Martial Arts = Awesome.

    :)

I took taekwondo for about 3-4 years and I just got my black belt right before I quit..due to school and all. It's surprising how quick you get your black belt in taekwondo, except that you have to have it for at least a year to be an official "black belt". Everyone fights dirty anyway while we're sparring and the instructor's not looking. It sucks when I fight fair..

My personal opinion: Tae Kwon Do is a very easy, simple and impractical martial art. Its also the most practiced. The reason? Its the most commercialized. In reality, one very rarely has the distance in a fight to throw fantastic kicks that Tae Kwon Do teaches you. Most of the time a fight is in a close combat situation, face to face with your attacker, not five feet away. Tae Kwon Do is a very flashy art, and looks good, but not very practical at all. Soo Bahk Do shares many of these problems as well, though its focus on the hip makes it more powerful in its techniques, and several other aspects make it a little better in this regard. Jujutsu is amazing, very applicable to real world situations, but its also a b*tch to learn. Takes forever to go up the ranks in that one.

very true, thats why i asked my intructor to teach my hopkito... and street fighting for close range, how to break arms and heads, take down moves and so on-so i leave the kicks behind in a real fight

    Hapkido!

LOL, unless you're absolutely positive of the spelling in which case its and art I've never heard of.

Sounds cool though, seems similar to the Jujutsu I'm taking.

I've heard of something called a "kata." What form of martial arts does that fall under?

A 'kata' isn't a martial art, its the japanese word for 'prearranged set of movements', or as I've known it to be a 'form'.

Most martial arts have forms or 'kata' in them, where you memorize a particular set of movements and perform them in order, moving the right direction.

Oh, I knew it wasn't a form of martial arts. I just thought that kata was used in only one martial art, you know?

I just didn't know exactly what it was. Thanks, though.

Taekwondo was just my basics, and I think it screwed up my joint all the while. I've been to the chiropractor about 2 times in a year with hip problems. I need to find something that'll help me get flexible without straining my bones. I feel like a rickety chair walking.

80% of fights end up on the ground. ;)

My grandpa is going to introduce me to a Aikido school, eventually. I'm very interested and can't wait. :D

Yup, same thing as kata, just in Korean, and i'm not sure how to spell it either :p

Very very true. And from my experience, korean arts do not teach any defense while in this position, as oppose to japanese arts.

Aikido is cool, very similar to Jujutsu, but deals with Ki a bit more, and has wider flowing movements, as oppose to Jujutsu's tight to body movements.

Korean martial arts are more focused on sport and show, not really into self-defense. It's fun for a workout, but not that great as a martial art.

I was looking towards Muay Thai for another offensive martial art. :shifty:
