I think MTV are saving the top bands to have bigger fights later in the tournament, and making their early rounds easy, lol

If you knew anything about college basketball, this would make perfect sense to you .

Linkin Park is a "1 seed" which means they get easy opponents for the first few rounds.

I'm surprised REM is getting shut out like this. They're a pretty respectable band.

Probably no less relevant than Linkin Park will be when/if they've been around for 30-odd years.

I was worried at first about LP's toughest opponents (if 30STM obviously, and Paramore/Kings of Leon and A7X/Disturbed make it).

Then I saw how much LP was beating R.E.M. I have faith. :D

I never considered "R.E.M" to be an easy band to beat by any means. The fact that they're getting pretty much destroyed, should make Linkin Park feel pretty good about their fanbase.

I still can't figure out the current fan base for this band. They have 25 million fans on Facebook (by far the most out of any band), and yet their sales have gone down and their concert attendance has declined (at least in the U.S.) since the Minutes to Midnight era. One might say that all of these people that "liked" Linkin Park liked them before A Thousand Suns came out. And yet, they've gained 7 million + Facebook fans since ATS's release. A popular band such as Kings of Leon has 7 million fans alone. And then LP crushes R.E.M. in this MTV thing. So what gives? Are they the most popular band in the world, or not?

There may not be a way to know for sure.

Especially since the music industry is in such a state of flux. You can't rely on record sales because those are going down for *everyone* (if anyone knows about a record sales metric that uses like a gaussian bell curve or something else besides the now-useless raw sales numbers, I would like to know). Now there is the advent of youtube and customisable radios where people don't even need to own the tracks they want to hear anymore. Not to mention peer to peer stuff. And on top of that, the economic state of the western world isn't like it used to be. Concerts are really expensive, and real life stuff like high unemployment makes going to them hard. Basically, I think using the exchange of money as a measurement of popularity is unrealistic.

I like to think that numbers like Youtube's combined rating/view count and Facebook 'likes' are better methods of comparison than outdated sales measurement methods. It doesn't cost anything to "like" something.

Not to mention a good amount of "fans" on Linkin Park's Facebook only "Liked" them so they could bash the shit out of them for not making more albums like Hybrid Theory & Meteora.

I can't believe you just compared Kings of Leon with Linkin Park in terms of popularity. Kings of Leon are in the phase of LP back in the early 2000s and they haven't even achieved that level of success. They just recently got into the mainstream as early as 2008 especially here in the U.S. I never bought into them but a lot of my friends do. Give them a couple of years like a decade and then make a decent comparison when they're no longer the hot new stuff. Although if you want to measure popularity imagine LP and KoL both playing a free concert in the same area in two different venues. Now who do you think will have more fans pouring out in droves?
