ROCK supergroups Linkin Park and Metallica have been signed up to headline a massive new Scottish music festival.

The two-day event called Download 2004 is set for Glasgow Green on June 2 and 3.

The bill for the ''head banger's ball'' will be unveiled next week on Radio One and also at a press conference in Glasgow.

But first again with the gig news I can exclusively reveal the string of other big name acts approached to appear include Slipknot, Korn, Machine Head and Audio slave.

An audience of 35,000 rock fans is expected each day and tickets will go on sale soon.

Last summer, the first ever Download festival attracted a huge audience to Donington Park, the holy grail of heavy metal.

Now it's also being staged again at Donington and for the first time in Scotland. Organisers CPL and DF Concerts hope it will become an annual event to rival T In The Park.

They have pulled off a real coup confirming Metallica, who haven't played in Scotland since 1996 but made a surprise appearance in the Scuzz Tent at last year's Download.

Their list of chart-topping CDs includes The Black Album, Master Of Puppets and last year's St Anger.

Megastars Linkin Park their Grammy-nominated debut album, Hybrid Theoryin 2001sold 14 million copies will play to their biggest-ever Scottish audience at Download.

The follow-up, Meteora which included the smash hit, Somewhere I Belong topped charts worldwide.

A Download insider told me'' Metallic a are currently one of the hottest tickets on the music scene and Linkin Park have become a supergroup in their own right, too.

''This event will showcase the cream of the world's rock acts. If metal is your kind of music, it doesn't get much better than this.

''It's hoped this will be a smaller version of Donington which will then grow to become a much larger annual event.''

She added: ''It's not regarded as a direct rival to T In The Park, which is not an out-and-out rock event.

''But if Scotland can stage two successful annual outdoor festivals the real winners will be music fans.''

In Email on January 4 we revealed Metallica would appear at Glasgow Green on June 2.

We also tipped the Red Hot Chili Peppers to return to Scotland after playing three sell-out gigs here in 2003 to a total of 65,000 fans.

Again, we were spot on. The Chilis, have confirmed they'll headline a show at Murrayfield on June 13.

Last year, the group whose hits include By The Way, Californication and The Zephyr Song celebrated their 20th anniversary.

Another music legend heading this way is veteran rocker Jerry Lee Lewis,68, who plays the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow on February 24.

The piano player, nicknamed The Killer, made his recording debut in the 1950s with Elvis and Johnny Cash at Sun Studios in Memphis.

His classic hits include Whole Lot ta Shakin' Goin' On and Great Balls Of Fire. In 1986, Lewis was one of the first ever inductees into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

And in 1989, actor Dennis Quaid starred as his music idol in a bio-pic of his life called Great Balls Of Fire.

Now the rock legend is set to reach a whole new generation of fans.

He has recorded a duets album with some of his most famous fans, including Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant and BB King.

Meanwhile, singer-song writer Jackson Browne has confirmed a rare solo acoustic gig at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow on October 27. Tickets, priced £30, are on sale now from 0141-353 8000.

And American soul legend George Benson will appear at the Edinburgh Playhouse on May 28 as part of his Irreplaceable World Tour.

The evergreen star's string of classic hits include Give Me The Night, Turn Your Love Around and Never Give Up On A Good Thing.
