    But still...

The Smiths released four albums with their last one being in 1987. Their first "Best of..." collection wasn't released until 1992.

In my opinion, things need to die down or have a long running career (such as Depeche Mode's 'Best Of...' collection being released in between their 11th and 12th album) before they can be given a proper "best of" tribute.

I originally had a big post here, but instead I'll just say this:

I wouldn't be surprised if this is being done because the band is very near the end of their Warner Brothers contract and Warner is looking to maximize profit. Assuming they don't renew the contract, the band only has 2 releases left before they've fulfilled their obligations. With the band's huge internet following, and record labels on the fast track to becoming useless, I can't see the band staying with a major label once they're done with Warner. They really don't need to.

Maybe this is the end of an era for Linkin Park on Warner Music Group?
Sometimes the companies do this kind of stuff the a contract ends or is cancelled.

I kind of hope this is the case. Along with this, I hope LP starts self-producing.

This would also kind of explain their attitude with LT...

Would leaving Warners prevent old demos from being released in the future because they were recorded during the contract period? I've heard of stuff like this happening before.

    This.

Before MTM was released, the band signed an extension for 4-5 more releases (cant remember the number) as part of a settlement for the lawsuit. MTM counted as one release, Road To Revolution as another, then there was A Thousand Suns and LIVING THINGS as two more. The band needs only one more release and they're done. And that could be a live album, greatest hits album, box set or even a 6th studio album to complete the contract.

Which it now makes perfect sense why this is being released. Think about it: if you were the band and had an opportunity to release your 6th album through Warner, or instead release a live album/filler to complete the deal *thus* making album number six potentially an independent release, what would you choose?

The band is successful enough to make it on their own. It's time to go the path of Radiohead and NIN.
In theory yes, as Warner makes money on ALL album releases, including LPU. They own all material recorded under their contract. This would not apply to things done pre-Warner (Xero stuff) but any other demos would likely remain legal property of Warner.

    Record scratches

... I'm sorry but TR side project was just signed to Columbia Records,

Chances are he may sign up for the same record company

simplified version: NIN may not be an independent band anymore

    Best of NIN 2014 confirmed...

Pretty strange that he decided to do that after he made that huge blog post a few years ago about how he was finally 'free' and so happy to be a free agent and away from the grasp of record labels. Especially after he's said for over 20 years that record labels are evil etc etc.

Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this? Am I missing something? This just seems like a cheaper way to buy their studio discography digitally rather than buying each individual album.

Trent has mentioned that HTDA and NIN are two separate entities. I don't think NIN is being signed to Columbia.

NIN's 'Best of' is being released exclusively with the audio streaming platform (similar to Spotify) Trent is developing along with Dre.
