There have been people fired for being a democrat on facebook.
There have been people fired for being a republican on facebook.
If you are a teacher you should just stay the hell away from facebook entirely. Teachers are not supposed to have private lives.
You will be fired for complaining about anything on facebook.

    And my favorite part:
it is a regular job interview procedure now for potential bosses to ask for your facebook password. Of course this makes facebook pretty mad so I don't expect it to stay legal for very long.

In my younger years it was taught to me by my parents to not share anything on the internet. Along comes facebook and the first thing it asks for is my full name and my college's .edu address. Of course, with peer pressure I signed on, on the caveat that it was strictly a college thing that probably only my close friends would ever use. Now I realize the rug's been pulled out from under me, and this facebook is now ubiquitous. I swear, as soon as Diaspora hits beta I'm killing that facebook account and starting over from scratch.

This is fucking absurd. Talk about a violation of rights. This poor excuse for judge ought to be fired, or flogged. I would like to see that

    That's sad.

if you have facebook, make sure the outside public CANNOT see it.

Which completely defeats the purpose of social networking.

Facebook is not intended for interfacing with strangers and the general public, it's for interacting with people you know in real life only.

I follow two rules with Facebook:

    1. Don't befriend people I work with on Facebook
    2. Don't say anything on Facebook that I wouldn't say to my boss's face because even though I don't befriend coworkers, you never know who knows who and word gets around.

I remember a girl complained about her chores on Facebook, and the dad got so mad he got her laptop and shot six bullets into the computer. He also videotaped it and posted it on Youtube. It received a million views and sparked a web and media frenzy.

So kids, don't complain about chores. Especially not in public.

    ^ This.

I am a student and I don't have a job yet, but I made it a rule that by no means I will follow/befriend/like any page or account related to politics because you just don't know, who knows who, and stuff like that. My country is in a very precarious political situation right now, where sectors and people itself are completely polarized and this semi-dictatorial government bases their hiring/job keeping on how much you kiss the President's ass or his party. So I will not risk myself on losing a potential job opportunity and keep my opinions to myself or comment them on a safe, trusted enviroment.

Even though it's a bit absurd to fire people like the case explained above, some cross the line of stupidity and act irresponsibly on social networking sites. I read not too long ago a case of a colombian anesthesiologist who published pictures of herself in the OR, showing the lack of following sanitary rules, and even mocking her patients by making sarcastic, disrespectful comments and captions. Disciplinary actions were taken and I'm yet to find out if her licence will be revoked (there is a media outrage there, people are the ones demanding it)

However it is NOT right for employers to ask for private information or forbid people to have accounts on social networking sites. But if people used them responsibly, they wouldn't be making those moves.
