    Don't use iTunes.

I'm not even being a smartass this time, iTunes is prone to so many problems is unbelievable. Every time a new version is release to adapt to a new product, the whole back end for music gets completely destroyed over and over again. Try something like Winamp or Foobar2000

I have to use iTunes for my iPhone and the current 'screw up' I get is the damned thing copying 2 of every track to my iPhone. I thought the duplicate issue was worked out back when iPod Videos came out but apparently Apple went and fucked it all up again.

I suggest using Google for that; first result brings you to my intended answer.

It's an substitute iPod Manager, for foobar, just like you asked. I don't think it works on the newer iPods [you didn't exactly specify], but this wiki has some information about developments. I hear MediaMonkey is decent.

Winamp's decent with interfacing with iPods. It's what my friend and I used when I uploaded my entire external hard drive onto his 80 GB iPod Classic.

Try using Amarok, if they even have that for windows or mac.
