"what I'm pushing for, is getting comfortable with the old us [...] This time we're not being so afraid of sounding like us"

Getting comfortable doesn't mean making a conscious effort to do the same stuff. It's making an effort to not discard what could potentially be a good idea because it feels too "Linkin Park" (whatever that may mean to them). That means there will be more focus on making music than experimenting for the purpose of not "sounding like Linkin Park".

Also, it's not like "personal" means angsty. WFTE is personal and awesome

Interesting read. But, like some people already mentioned, literally ANYTHING can happen at this point.

I also think mixing old and new can mean a lot of different things, not neccesarily nu metal. I think the whole band has already grown out of that sound. If anything, I bet they will most likely exclude interludes and filler tracks from this album, and focus more on long, structured songs. Also maybe focusing more on catchiness and choruses and less odd structures? Maybe an opening instrumental, kinda like Wake? Maybe a heavier guitar sound in some songs? I think ATS is their best album by far, but I wouldn't mind a rockier vibe in the next album.

And, seriously, people still waiting for nu metal to make a comeback? In 2012? When absolutely anything the band has done or say for (at least) the last 5 years even hints at the idea? I don't understand how some people still claim to be fans of a band when they like only 2 out of 4 records.

Still hoping for a 2012 release.

Just hope they will release something soon. I hate being kept waiting for something. Good to train my patience though. :(

    Agreed.

I would guess weeks, probably early December.

    Yeah, chances are he's talking more about initial song ideas/seeds not actual direction, especially when you consider what Dave said last week;

    • LP are still working on it and it’s coming together. The album can still take off in all different directions so to speak as though they are done wouldn’t mean anything.

    • They are pushing themselves with creative song writing and it’s different from things they’ve done in the past.

God, I hate getting all wrapped up in album hype! I can't help it though!

I love the idea of going back to the old sounds and mixing them with the new. I know a lot of people will say that it would be a step backwards, but what Mike said makes a lot of sense. If that's their sound, then it's their sound. Deliberately tossing away ideas that sound too much like what people think of as "Linkin Park" can only go on for so long.

I liked ATS and I would like an album of ATS + HT + Reanimation even more.

And when I say that, I mean the "sounds," not a step backwards in lyrics, etc.

And I really don't see the love for MTM. Honestly? It's not experimental... It's the "LP trying to make even more radio friendly stuff than ever" album. Seriously, someone try to argue with me that Given Up, NMS, BIO are so experimental that they would be RISKY for radio. Or that LOATR, SOTD, VD, WID, etc. wouldn't EVER fit in on a adult top 40 radio station... Honestly... I just don't get how people can think the album was so experimental. Maybe compared to HT and Meteora, but HT and Meteora-style music doesn;t exactly get played on the radio all too much anymore. In my opinion, they actually FOLLOWED THE HERD of other bands crossing over and doing adult-friendly music. It's not exactly risky in a music business sense.

There are plenty of other bands I can list that have done far riskier steps than LP doing MTM.

That's why it's never worth it for a band to make music for anyone else but themselves. Some people will never be happy.

I'm very happy, please don't project. I just don't think they've made an album that's consistently good yet and I'm entitled to that opinion.

So you don't consider any of LP's albums to be consistently good?

ATS did have some hybrid theory elements, and I think it should have come straight after M2M, and I do love that album.

It's just that I want the band to take that sound even further and not purposely try to install an old time sound into anything they make.

    Things I would not like:
ATS evolved with HT-MT style lyrics
    HT-MT evolved with ATS lyrics
    Very heavy, aggressive songs
Screaming. Come on, at least one album without screaming? Please! (blackout doesn't count... :p)

    Things I would like:
    Orchestration
    Electronica
    Percussion
    Personal and Political lyrics
    Instrumentals
    Structure breaking anthems
LONG SONGS as in over 10 minutes
for it to not sound anything like HT or MT haha

    --
Don't get me wrong I love HT! But I think of it like this, HT is a fish, it's such an amazing piece of life but then comes the totally evolved primate called ATS. I don't want to see another fish, I'd rather see a superhuman.

At this point and time, I don't care what the hell it sounds like, I just want it to be fucking awesome.
