Alright, I've tried the Apple website, and I've tried Apple phone services. I need your help.

My iPod has been fucking with me these past few days. It's been freezing on me at random times, and I haven't done anything that could have damaged the hard drive (like dropping it). Now, it's displaying a folder with an exclamation point. The Apple website says that I need to reset it, and if that doesn't work, restore it. Well, everytime I reset my iPod, the folder appears again. And to restore it, I have to connect it to the computer. Everytime I do, it recognizes it, and before the iPod updater can recognize it, the computer removes it, meaning I have to reinsert the USB. If I keep the USB in, it recognizes the iPod, then doesn't.

If I can't find a way to fix my iPod, I'm going to go to the store and get it fixed. There is no way I am spending more money on another mp3 player. I don't care if I have to get my hard drive replaced or completely erase everything on my iPod. But for now, I need to try to find a way and fix it.

I deeply, deeply appreciate any help from anybody.

Do you have an apple store nearby? If so, take it there as soon as you can, where if it's under warranty, there should be no charge, else they'll probably charge you between $100 - $200 to replace it.

If there isn't a store, tell the phone support you want to send it in for service. Hopefully it's under warranty, so they shouldn't give you too much of a hassle.

I was thinking about that. I'll do it if there's no other way to fix it.

It's likely you won't be able to fix it on your own unless you know what you're doing. But you made this thread, so I assume you're not an engineering-genuis ;-P

Send give it to them. They should (for free) check it out and tell you the problem and how much it'll cost before you go ahead w/ the service.

Yes, I am definitely not an engineering-genius. How kind of you to recognize that.

Most likely, my iPod is still under warranty, so I'm going to head to the store today and have them check it out. I was originally planning on doing that, but I made this thread just to see if there was another way without having to go to the store. But that's obviously the best option.

What I'm really curious to find out is why my iPod is fucking up. I mean, I haven't dropped it or done anything to fuck up the hard drive. I mean, I've only had this iPod since late May / early June, and why it's fucking up now is my only question.

Well, all I can say is that my trusty U2 iPod lasted me a good half of a year.

The warranty on them is a year, so if you said yours lasted you half a year, than you should be good.

My brother's mini crapped out. He took it to an Apple Store, and they replaced it right there.

A year, eh? Well, that's good. I guess I'm not going to have trouble there.

Would they replace the iPod, or actually go in and fix it?

If it's internal damage or just an error, chances are they'll repair yours and give you back the same one.

If it has physical damage to the casing or the hard drive, they'll give you a brand new one.

Ask for a new one, though. Tell them you'd prefer one that wouldn't have a history of faultiness. (sp?)

That's what I plan on doing.

Would they give me a brand new one of the same model, or a select model of my choice? I would think that they'd give me the same model, right?

Take it to the store and get a new one. Hopefully you still have the mp3s you stored on the Pod on your harddrive.

Omar: I was thinking that. I don't want a better one, anyway. This model suits me just fine.

Derek: All of the music that I have is still on iTunes. All I need to do is update iTunes because it's an older version (I'll still have my music, though). So thankfully, I don't lose any music.

    I just lose an iPod.

Eh, its possible. He has a U2 iPod which was discontinued some time ago, and Apple rarley repairs iPods. They may not have a choice but to give him a better iPod

Well, if I remember correctly, they started making a line of U2 iPods which had color screens. I need to check the site.

    *checks site*

Well, I've looked around the Apple.com site. Evidently, they seem to have discontinued the U2 iPods. I mean, if I can't locate a recent site for the U2 iPod and its features, then they must have discontinued production.

That disappoints me because I really like the U2 iPod. The color is unique and the signatures on the back are real cool to me. They might have some at the store still, but it disappoints me that I can't find a recent page for it on the Apple website.

I don't want a different model. I mean, if I get one of those video iPods, it wouldn't bother me. But I really would prefer getting a U2 one.

EDIT: Well, Derek, you're correct. Apple has sold out all of the U2 iPods. I guess I have no choice but to get a new one.

I called Apple's hotline. They directed me to a representative about it. So, I'm disappointed now.

I know this is a double-post, and I apologize. But I just wanted to make the announcement that my iPod is fixed...or so I think.

I was frustrated, so I gave it a big whack and it started working.

So, I don't know what it is. If it freaks out again, I'm taking it to the store.

I would recommend you trade it in anyway. If it breaks again after warranty, you'll get nothing. I know, you really like the U2 model, but it would be wiser to have a brand-new iPod.

Hope things continue to go well.

I know. The iPod is still faulty. You never know when it's going to break down again.

So, I'm going to go to the store, and tell them about the problem and see if they can fix it. Or if they can get me a new one but the same model.

I have a 60 gig photo. My ipod gets reformatted every month or so. It's a hard drive, remember, so it gets fragmented. When I have my ipod off all night and turn it on in the morning, the menus will freeze for a bit.

Folder and exclamation point means you need to plug it in, format and reinstall the firmware. Oh wait, it won't recognize it. I'm thinking that it could be your end. Maybe your USB card was disconnecting and connecting all the time like it is now, and messed up the ipod. Try using another cable on another computer.
