I was talking to a friend last night on msn about internet browsers and I mentioned that my IE takes up too much memory and space on my shit computer. Now she recommends using Opera like she does but doesn't recommend using Mozilla Firefox but still I'm not too sure. Can anyone recommend me to a internet browser that doesn't take up as much as space and is more reliant than IE?

Mozilla FireFox is the best out there. (My opinion)

It loads code faster than IE, you get a lot less viruses, and just runs more smoothly. Plus the add ons you can get rule.

Stop trying to stream 30 or more porn videos then.

    ------

Mozilla Firefox is simple, takes up very little memory and does everything you need it too. Opera is good because of the 'quick dial' function, but you can actually get that for Firefox anyway.

I'm not a fan of Chrome or IE, but whatever takes people's fancy I suppose.

Firefox and chrome are both good browers.

Firefox gives the familier User-Interface as IE, so everything seems kinda easy to spot.

Mozilla Firefox 3 - Strong browser. Very widely used and works in nearly every website. Has very strong NoScript and Adblock Plus blocker. Most widely used. And there is so much more. It's the most robust and most versatile when you take into consideration all it offers and the support for FF since its the next widely used browser after IE. It's the most used among users that know anything, but obviously IE comes with Windows and the average person does not search for an additional browser.

Opera - Faster than Firefox and has much more built into it than Chrome currently. Nearly just as customizable as Firefox. Probably does not work on about 5% of the websites out there. Has a fairly good ad-blocker (right mouse click on any photo and you can block content). Has many widgets that can be used off browser, when it is open, such as a clock or games on your desktop. Their widgets were actually out before FF add-ons. Very very fast (both Chrome and Opera are faster than FF3- but FF is no slouch).

Oh and as mentioned above, they are the creators of the Quick Dial. Firefox does have an extension (Fast Dial) of this, but the Opera one is the best one out there. It is much more seamless than all others. And their well known "mouse gestures" to make browsing even cooler. They also have a very good browser sync which allows you to sync your info between your Opera Mini (cell phone) or your browser on other computers.

Opera is probably the least resouce/RAM intensive. It's hard to use without another browser, since it does not work on every webpage, but it will definitely run on your system without issues better than all the others.

Google Chrome - arguably the fastest browser out there (Opera either tied or in 2nd place). Only IE 8 Beta uses a similar system in which each tab in your browser is treated as a separate entity. Thus, if one tab crashes you can still surf the web on the other ones. So your RAM will be split among tabs.

Simple, which is good and bad (limited options and not customizable at the moment - can't even use google toolbar on it). It still has limited bookmark support and still has no additional apps/widgets/ad-ons. It has a nice tab setup where you can drag a tab from a separate browser window into the other one. That's very nice. The Omnibar (navigation bar) doubles as a search application.

It works very well on this message forum (using it to type this).

Here is an example of how Chrome works with data.

Advant (if you need IE access) - It is a modded Internet Explorer browser. I use it in place of Internet Explorer for IE only websites. It has a built in popup blocker and has a lot of options to tweak and customize. However, I feel the other above browsers are all smoother in feel and use

I use all 4. Depends how I feel, but FF is my go to.

IE - Let's not even go there.
Firefox - Leaky faucet, but works like a charm. Just need to watch out for extensions with memory leaks [a lot of them, by the looks of it].
Opera - I don't know why, but I keep getting a 'bloated' feeling from it. Scores best on Acid tests, if I remember correctly.
Chrome - Simple. Too simple. Not extensible (official install; Chromium [I think?] doesn't count).
Safari - Let's not go there, either.

The winner in the acid tests keeps going back and forth. FF 3.1 beta is starting to show a lot of promise. And Opera's as well.

Acid does well on some of the tests, but its designed poorly for Windows OS, so its not even worth using on there. A lot more streamlined with Mac OSx though.

I'm going to guess you meant Safari in your second paragraph, in which case you are fully correct.

Opera and Safari (Webkit) get 100/100 on all the Acid tests. Firefox 3.1b1 only scores 93/100 on the Acid3 test.

Yep, and Chrome uses webkit as well, although they used a prior version which had some security issues, which i'm sure they patched. Sorry, yeah I meant Safari.

Well, my firefox often had 250-500K of RAM. I keep tonnes of tabs open though.

    FF FTW

Usually when I say that I mean Final Fantasy...

But really, Firefox, even if it's just because I've never picked up a virus since I started using it.

You can still pick up crap, if you aren't careful. Firefox has vulernabilities that are often patched just like any other browser. You still have to surf the web safe and not click on every link that exists out there.

Things like ad-block plus and No Script definitely can help prevent, but it always takes the user to be smart.

Did you mean megabytes? Because 500 kilobytes is absolutely nothing.

Yah, Firefox can't run at only 500kb's. 500 MB is where it tends to sit with some good use on a java/flash intensive site and/or a tab or two open.

I stopped using Internet Explorer a long time ago, it's just... eh. I'm using FireFox now and I have nothing to complain about. It's great.

Opera would also be a very good choice, though I don't like it that much.

Well I used Firefox on a computer with only 128MB of RAM so I probably have no idea what you're talking about
