http://ireallyneed.info/ Mmkay, my dad was buying a few domains for himself, since .info domains were on sale, and he thought up that domain, and surprisingly, it wasn't taken. So he bought it and told me to put it to use for myself. So yeah, now I'm sitting here trying to figure out what I should do with it. Any ideas?
Hmm... Perhaps community based news feed/editorial blogs? Kind of like Digg? I think it'd compliment the domain idea quite well. Or some type of Wikipedia-like thing would fit as well. In any event, good idea with the domain name, haha. A lot of those seem to be turning up recently. I wish I'd had thought of that back then.
I was thinking more Windows Live QnA -style (or Yahoo! Answer, etc etc) at first, but I doubt it'd float because of the current leaders in the market (ahem, Windows Live, Yahoo, Google [i think?], who else?)... The Wikipedia idea came to mind too, but what would it focus on? General knowledge, I guess? I mean, the domain name says "i really need info", but what kind? Hmm... Although, that could very well be moderately successful, just need to pick the right subject. I'm surprised my dad thought of the domain name too, lmfao.
http://ireallyneed.info/index2.html So, I think I have a mostly solid idea of what I'm going to do now. I'll have a forum (still unsure of the category/forum setup), and I'll have a digg-like rating system, and a QnA-style 'best answer' button. I'm going to try to make it as easy to use as I can, hopefully. As for the wiki, I have no clue how that'll work, I haven't much experience with wiki's, nor am I sure how I'm going to manage it, but I'm sure I'll figure something out. I can always scrap the wiki idea, but I want to give it a try first, but having a forum might make the wiki useless. We'll see. I have no clue if I can get the idea to float or not, but hey, it's worth a try. Maybe with some effort in advertising it, I might get somewhere with it. Oh, and don't mind the style, the darkness is most likely temporary for now.
Eh? It sounds interesting but I'm not grasping the concept entirely. You mean, the top rated content posted shows up like on the homepage or something? So basically like Digg?
No. I'm thinking of the comment system on digg, not the promotion system. To somewhat illustrate what I'm thinking, take a look at the top right corner of this post, it says #8, right? Replace that with the amount of votes the topic has, and two little thumbs [ala digg-style], and beside that, perhaps, a best answer button [ala qna-style]. This somewhat ties to another idea I have in my head, but I'll keep that to myself till later. ...although, that does give me an idea. Seeing how IPB has a topic rating system, I could have the top rated topics (aka questions) posted on the front page, or something. Hmm. Ideas ideas. I've been really wanting to design a skin for a while, so yeah. Expect something minimalistic and easy to use. Gotta love my style, heh. I might scratch the wiki idea, kinda complicated, and too much work to manage (vanadalism, etc.) and the fact it'd be pretty much a carbon-copy of wikipedia. Plus wiki's keep confusing me, waay complex. So yeah, perhaps back to the drawing board, but I had a crafty url I could have used: ireallyneed.info/about/topic_title - that woulda just been perfect. But I'm focusing more on a qna forum, I guess. Unless I could get someone to manage the wiki...
So it's kind of like, a community of random info that generates "top" spots of the most favorite topics posted? That sounds pretty cool if I got it straight. I'd imagine some great competition if you advertise it to the right group(s). Basically, it's like Digg's system meets FAQ-feedback format ("Did this answer help you? Yes or No.")? Eh, maybe I'll just wait. I'm still digging the whole domain name thing anyways.
Yeah, it's pretty much a forum with a bunch of categories and forums (specifics still undecided), where you simply post a question (topic) in one of the forums, and people answer (reply) to your question. People can rate your answer, like the digg comment system, and also if they think it's the best answer, they can select the best answer button. I'm going to take this one step more, but I'll keep it quite surprise for now, to not lose all element of interesting. Using IPB's topic ratings (which is also on the LPA, if you haven't noticed), people can rate the questions, and the top questions will be posted to the homepage, or wherever I decide (currently undecided). So yes, it's pretty much what you just said, but web 2.0-ish. --- Oh, the wiki idea is scrapped for now. Perhaps I'll introduce it later on, but till then, back to the drawing board for something not so complicated.
Web 2.0? Christ, web 2.0 boggles my mind. You'll have to tell me your secrets if you can get tags to work and such with IPB. Yes. I can just imagine though... "I NEEDIN HELPZ WIT MI COPUTRZ!" *five star* ... You know it's bound to happen. Sounds cool, though. Looking foreword to seeing it in action.
Web 2.0 pretty much means AJAX. Tags? Hmm. That could be an interesting mod. Although, I've never been too fond of tags. I just never got on that boat when it got here. The only point to tags I see is for assistance to searching, but IPB is already pretty capable of finding topics already, usually. I could always scrap the topic rating idea, and fully disable it, and instead have the top rated answers on the homepage. That would get around the "OMGZ MY COMPUTERZ ON FIRE!" *five star* flaw, I'd think. Hopefully if I advertise it properly (something I may need help with), it'll succeed.
AJAX, eh? Damn, I took a look at AJAX diagrams and they scared me. I look foreword to seeing how it works out. I like Omar's idea with the whole student resource thing. Should look into that.
Bingo. Myself, and other students would pretty much be the target audience [note to self: make a school category], along with other curious people. I'd imagine the site would be full of students, as they'd be looking for answers most (for homework, etc). I can always adjust the site to the visitors' likings. Yeeah, I know what you mean. Need to learn some basic Javascript first before you can properly understand AJAX.
