Hey guys i've been following this forum for about 2-3 years now but i've never posted anything but anyway, I was wondering what your guys thoughts and opinions on hybrid theory EP are? I haven't seen much discussion about it on this forum, probably cause it's so old  But either way i'm interested in your guys opinions! Personally, I love the dark vibes on this album along with that underground hip hop sound on tracks like Technique and Step Up. I really enjoy the EP, although I wish Part Of Me had chester scream "Cut myself free" and that And One had it's live outro with chester singing somehow incorporated into the track but that's just me nitpicking. How well do you think the EP weighs up against their studio albums? :)

There are better versions of the songs on the EP, recorded both before and after the versions heard on that release. A lot of what's on it isn't too bad, just dated, much like the full-length album that would come after it.

I really liked that album, especially Part Of Me and And One. The old-school electronic sounds coupled with Chester raspy vocals are great. Even Mike on Part Of Me raps in a way that you feel he really means what he is saying, and it ascends in tension as he gets louder and more aggressive with his vocals.

BTW there is a version of Part Of Me where Chester screams "Cut myself free!", its the demo for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmOv0JafUVI
like minuteforce said there are several versions for the songs.

If anyone knows here I have to ask, is that Mike Shinoda rapping on the outro of And One?

Yes, and it's one of the best verses he ever did, at least for me. The delivery is crazy.

Spit drips from the jaw of the witless witness
    Cryptic colloquialism shifts your midriff
Dog-paddle through a bog of shadows and smog
With my thought catalogue / analog / rap battle-log
Keep my distance and fear resistance
Hurt by persistence / the twisted web
Of tangled lies / strangles my hope to waste
And numbs the taste / and I'm forced to face
These hate crimes against the state of being
Feeling the helplessness press me to the ceiling
Reeling around rooms / riding a bubble of sound
Tuned to the frequency / making your chest shake with every boom
Involuntary muscle contraction / ignoring your neck's breaking
Musical gas / fume / euphoria
The sound pounds to make the dead flush
To hand you a head rush / with read thoughts and said stuff

It's great! I wish they would work it into their live show. Still hoping for Carousel or Part of Me some day...even if it's just a shortened verse or something like they've been doing.

Glad to hear you guys like it!

IKR, the intensity in mikes verses were sweet in Carousel and Part of me!

I wish they had kept that scream in the EP version :( it sounds so sick.

And yeah like filip said, it's mike :D

Me too! I was hoping they would play a few EP tracks along with hybrid theory for download festival :/ ah well..

I think they could do something like this for DL Festival:

    Carousel
    Technique
    Step Up
    And One
    High Voltage (Remix Version)
Part Of Me (Only main part of the song)

Like others have said it sounds rather dated even by Hybrid Theory standards, but it's an amazing look back into the band's early history with Chester.

I do think that And One is one of the band's best nu-metal era songs of all time though. It has such a dark and unique atmosphere around it.

It's some of the most interesting heavy music the band has ever written, even still.

The visual art which accompanied the EP is pretty interesting as well

This EP is probably the best one I ever heard, thought I haven't listened to too many. I genuinely like all of the tracks on here, including "Ambient" at the end of Part of Me. I often wish that LP would revisit this style in terms of its experimentation with different sounds and samples. I really dig the chanting in Carousel and High Voltage. I'm also hoping that one day, LP will make a song that is in the same spirit of And One but doesn't necessarily sound like it. That song has to have one of the most unique structures that the band has ever used. Needless to say, I'm a HUGE fan of this song!

    Yes. Yes. Yes.

    ~

It's uglier, darker, it's not made for the radio, it's not like Hybrid Theory or Meteora. It is, in short, different, which makes it interesting. The lyrics are more abstract, while the choruses aren't huge and catchy, but grungy and abrasive. "Step Up" and "High Voltage" are pure hip hop. Linkin Park have never went back to this sound, and therefore EP just holds its unique place in the band's discography.

Listening to this EP again, there is a huge resemblance to the Hunting Party, especially in its raw vocals and the guitar work. The electronics seem to be placed a bit behind too, and they sound more organic rather than all polished similar to Hybrid Theory or Meteora. Even listening to the interludes, many of the samples have that similar quality. Not mainstream commercial stuff, but probably one of their most experimental works pre-ATS.
