In the hypothetical, there are plenty of guitarists that are willing to take a backseat to that kind of thing. I'm thinking of people like Robin Finck (NIN, Guns 'N Roses) who is just comfortable playing an electronic drumkit, violin, or synth. Or Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. There's a whole slew of talented multi-instrumentalists out there, and the great majority of them are all better than Brad Delson at guitar.

While this is true, not every guitarist is willing to not have their instrument be present in a song that their band is creating. I think what Andreina was referring to was the ability of a musician to put their pride aside if it betters the ending result of a song.

My argument still stands. Look at Jonny Greenwood. And look at Radiohead's latest album, King of Limbs. How much guitar is on those tracks?

Robin Finck left his job at Guns 'N Roses so he could take part in a live band that allows him to play a slew of other instruments and not be in the forefront.

John Frusciante is a genius guitar player who actively left a band so he could pursue electronics.

Ask me for 5 more examples.

Adrian Belew, Josh Klinghoffer, Chris Martin (very notable as he learned this during the recording of Viva La Vida, wherein he wasn't allowed to take part in the creative process initially as an experiment. Saw that in many cases there were better results. Song over pride.), Josh Homme, Dave Grohl.

Pump the breaks, dude! I wasn't trying to argue, I was just pointing out that the idea of rock bands view the guitar as a staple and refuse to live without it.
