Ok so I turn on my laptop, dell inspiron 6400, and it was working fine till I went to go open a microsoft word file i was working on and it froze.... so I restarted and when i did it came up with a blue screen that read something about microsoft turned off your computer to protecect it and under that it read UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and under that was stuff about what to do and turning it on in safe mode so and so forth... none of that crap worked....

PLEASE I REALLY NEED MY LAPTOP TO WORK!
    suggestions?!
and is it possible to fix without reformatting and losing all my crap?

how long have you had the laptop?

dont reformat just yet, b/c the hard drive might actually by the problem. im not too familiar with blue screen problems but, if it happens again try googling the problem with whatever numbers show up or other info comes up. it's probably happened to other windows users.

if u think you have enough info already i would get started incase things get worse.

That's a normal stop screen. If your computer senses as though shit's about to hit the fan, it'll stop the hard drive and you'll get that error. Restarting almost always does the trick.

well restarting just brought up the blue screen again but after checkin online at my college and with other people I got someone to run the recovery console and run check disc and after 3 hours of waiting we rebooted in safe mode and seeing that it worked then we then restarted again it turned on normally...

do you guys think I should be worried about if my harddrive my actually shit the bed again or what might of caused this that I could prevent from happening again?...

laptop hard drives can be pretty sensitive. even the slightest jostle or sudden movement can harm the drive. i guess if u have been treating your laptop so rough, try not to set it down hard, swing it too hard etc....

maybe you got a bad apple out of a bunch of hard drives

well Ive had the laptop for a lil over a year now(it was a year at christmas). So it was bound to start having problems
It could've been caused from a virus or some kinda malware that takes up alot of space on my drive and slows it down, according to some people I talked to

besides AVG, whats some other good free virus scanner things I can get?
