I know I've posted a couple threads related to sexuality, but I couldn't pass up this one. We've read the stories of teens committing suicide because out of fear of not being accepted or loved, we've seen how the religious right treats them (Pat Robertson blaming Hurricane Katrina on Ellen Degenerse), but the latest story to hit the newsrooms takes it to a whole different level. The story is that of a semi-well circulated Ugandan newspaper (circulation is 2,000 which for a newspaper in today's world, in a place like Uganda, isn't too bad) which has published a "homo-list," a list of 100 gay men (both in the closet and not) and ordering them to be killed. I was somewhat reluctant to see the story as actually relevant, until I read that since its publication 3 men have already been attacked. On the main page of the article is a graphic with the words "Hang Them" written across it. Here's the thing, I'm not one who believe's in the "victimized minority" ordeal. I don't like subgroups (whether race based, sexuality, religious, what have you) I believe people are individuals and should never be classified or defined whole heartedly by one aspect of themselves. However, it should be clear that right now homosexuals are a victimized minority (at least to some degree) and are in a civil rights movement of their own. http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/10/20/uganda.gay.list/?hpt=C1 (currently in Uganda it is a criminal act to be gay which carries up to 14 years prison sentence for just your orientation, some more info: "From 5 to 8 March 2009, a workshop took place in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, that featured three American evangelical Christians: Scott Lively, an author who has written several books opposing homosexuality; Caleb Lee Brundidge, a self-professed former gay man who conducts sessions to heal homosexuality; and Don Schmierer, a board member of Exodus International, an organisation devoted to promoting "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ".
