I don't think there's been posts about the Gorillaz so I'm making one :p!

I think you can call them a band... But anyways, if you've ever watched MTV and you've seen these cartoon characters fighting with giant gorillas/apes, that's the band Gorillaz :p. The band consists of 2d (vocals, keyboard), Murdoc (bass, turntables), Russel (Drummer, emcee) and Noodle (guitar). I don't know if those are supposedly what they play, but yeah, I love this band. I believe this is the first time an animated band was created that made their own music and collaborated with other artists.

People have probably on heard "Clint Eastwood", the only single to hit it big in the U.S., but in the U.K., they've released videos/singles for "19-2000", "Rock the House" and other tracks. They also released a B-sides album with songs that supposedly didn't make the cut on the actual debut album "Gorillaz". Supposedly the 'band' is going to make a movie or is in the process of making a movie a long with a new album. There's been rumors that all of that should come out by the end of the year or early next year (2003-2004).

If you're downloading some of their songs, and maybe if you're thinking to yourself.. "this band is just rediculous, what the hell?!", or if you think they haven't collaborated, then think again ;). They've collaborated with people such as Redman, who raps to the beat of "19-2000" in a rap he's called "Gorillaz on my Mind". The Gorillaz have also collaborated with D-12. D-12 came to the Gorillaz and decided to do the whole 9 yards with the single. The single is called "911" and it is based on the 9/11 attack and Osama Bin Laden. The band has also collaborated with a rapper named Phi Life (I think) creating a song called "The Sounder" which is pure rap except for the chorus where 2D just sings some messed up thing that's hard to understand. On the 'Gorillaz' album, you can download "Sound Check (Gravity)", an almost instrumental consisting of basically only turntables and piano.

If that's not enough, they even play some old school 'punk', lol. If you like a pure rock song, I suggest you download "M1A1", or "Punk". "Punk" is only over about a minute but it's a cool song that you'd probably just relisten to again because you want more of the sound (I know I do, lol). M1A1 starts out with a weird intro, but the riffs in that song are pretty heavy and it's just a cool rock song in all.

A lot of the songs on the album are more pushed to the rock side, but they're not like a regular rock band. They've got piano, turntables, and all the good stuff. Lyric wise, there's basically no meaning behind them, in my opinion, but this band has kickass beats like in "Tomorrow Comes Today".

Believe it or not, there is some Asian vibes in two songs (that I've heard so far). "Left Hand Suzuki Method", an almost instrumental has Noodle talking in Japanese at first, and then she translates it into English afterwards (yes, Noodle is a girl). The other song which has an Asian vibe is "Faust" which is like "Left Hand Suzuki Method", except it's not really made that well, but still has the Asian vibe in it.

    Here's 'Gorillaz' tracklisting:
    1. Re-Hash
    2. 5/4
    3. Tomorrow Comes Today
    4. New Genious (Brother)
    5. Clint Eastwood
    6. Man Research (Clapper)
    7. Punk
    8. Sound Check (Gravity)
    9. Double Bass
    10. Rock The House
    11. 19-2000
    12. Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)
    13. Starshine
    14. Slow Country
    15. M1 A1
    16. Dracula
    17. Left Hand Suzuki Method/Clint Eastwood (Ed Case Refix)
    ---
    Non-Album tracks/B-sides:
    - 12D3
    - Latin Simone (English Version)
    - Clint Eastwood (Phi Life Cypher Remix)
    - 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)
    - The Sounder
    - Faust
    - Ghost Train
    - Film Music
    - Tomorrow Dub
    - Don Quixote's Christmas Bonanza
    - 911
    - Gorillaz On My Mind

If these songs aren't enough, they've also released a remix record titles "Laika Come Home" (I think). I have yet to pick this up, but from what I've heard, the songs have been altered almost completely in most songs and I really enjoy the new vibe on some of the songs. The songs on the remix album are more reggae-ish, but not pure, just in that direction.

Laika Come Home tracklist: track name (name of song remixed)
    1. Jungle Fresh (19/2000)
    2. Strictly Rubbadub (Slow Country)
    3. Bañana Baby (Tomorrow Comes Today)
    4. Monkey Racket (Man Research)
    5. De-Punked (Punk)
    6. P45 (5/4)
    7. Dub Ø 9 (Starshine)
    8. Crooked Dub (Sound Check)
    9. Mutant Genius (New Genious)
    10. Come Again (Re-Hash)
    11. A Fistful Of Peanuts (Clint Eastwood)
    12. Lil' Dub Chefin' (M1 A1)

The only songs I don't really care for are the Latin Simone songs... I don't know why, but I just can't really seem to grasp interest in them. I like all the other songs though, except for "Don Quixote's Christmas Bonanza" and "Tomorrow Dub", because I haven't heard them yet.

Oh, and Gorillaz also have a DVD out (Celebrity Take Down). I don't know much about it because sadly I have yet to see it here in Hawaii, so yeah, if you happen to see it, tell me :p!

Gorillaz Website (not much to look at)

Leave your thoughts on what you think about this band :D!

I have only heard "Clint Eastwood", "Punk", and "Rock The House".
From only hearing those songs, I think they're pretty cool but I am not really into their music.

Is 19-2000 the video with the giant moose? That'd video is just awesome.

Me and my friend made a parody of "Clint Eastwood" where we messed around with the lyrics of the chorus.

"I'm not happy, I'm feeling sad,
I've got moonshine, in a bag,
I'm so useless, but not for long,
My poodle has a huge schlong.

The parody made no sense and was really immature on my friend's part (he thought it up), and I feel somewhat stupid for posting it, but feel free to laugh at my expense. :p

I should download some more songs, I enjoyed 19-2000 and Clint Eastwood.

I didn't know they had a remix album. Pretty cool. So far, I've heard:

Clint Eastwood (The original, Phi Life Chyper, and Ed Case)
    19-2000 (Original and Soulchild)
    Tomorrow Comes Today
    911
    Rock the House

I would get the debut album, but PA CD's aren't allowed in the house.

Keaton, you're my man! I'm a big Gorillaz fan, having both albums and having taped all their videos from Cartoon Network that one night.

I love Latin Simone, you goof. The guy singing and playing trumpet is from a really old Latin group which is popular among Latino people.

    Five Four is the song!!!

"SHE MADE ME KILL MYSELF, COME ON!!!!"

    I also LOVE "M1A1"

    "HELLOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

The Sounder also kicks so much ass! I got the full version. I too have the Redman and D12 song. Although, I didn't know about ANOTHER remix album!!! I'm so lost!!!

    Some fan I am.

Stick 'N Move, that Soulchild remix is on the G-Sides album, not the self-titled album.

I think the U.K. version is different. I was looking at a U.K. fansite and it didn't mention "Dracula" on the official album, but supposedly a G-Sides song. I got kinda' confused but yeah, lol.

Next to LP, Gorillaz is my favorite band :D.

5/4 just freaks me out because it talks about someone turning their dad on or something... It's quite scary, lol.

Anyways, glad you're a fan Jawknee as well as all the others! :D

And I beg your pardon but I love the original 19-2000, but I love all their songs... :p

I can listen to Latin Simmone as much as I want, just it's not one of my more favorite tracks :D.
