So now that the new Fall Out Boy album is... available, what do people think of it?

Personally I've been able to split the album into around five or six tracks that are really good, with the best being pretty average tracks where it seems like the band got complacent at points during the recording. They've said that they didn't want to overthink the album as they apparently did with Infinity On High (which has grown on me a lot after I'd originally had the same opinion as I have of this album, incidentally) and as such they gave themselves less time to write and record it, so it could be that. I don't know. But anyway:

The stand-outs (in as much of an order as time will allow now):
Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet
    West Coast Smoker
    What A Catch, Donnie
    w.a.m.s
    I Don't Care
    The (Shipped) Gold Standard

I think that's it. I'm in a hurry so I might have missed something. Opinions plz.

I have the same opinion as OP. There's some really good catchy tracks stuff on here and some average stuff but the good stuff shines. It's a keeper.

I think this album has elements of Infinity on High but as a whole reminds me more of their older stuff. I really like the album as a whole, while there are a few tracks that could have been better. I do like the CD a lot though, but need to listen to it more to figure out where I would place it.

I'm not feeling this album. I feel let down in a way. I have loved everything they have released but this album is just....not what I expected I guess.

    My favorite tracks are:

    -I Don't Care
    -America's Suitehearts
-Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet
    -What A Catch, Donnie

...And that's all. The rest just don't click with me.

I don't like it. But then again, I said the same thing about Infinity on High, and now it's one of my favorite albums.

I dont want to sound like a dick or step on anyones toes or anything but what were people expecting from this album? Because to me, it sounds like Fall Out Boy. The singles that were released were a few high points on the album but songs like 27 and West Coast Smoker still stand out to me. It just came out to me as exactly what I expected from them.

It's pretty much the sound I expected. I guess I was just hoping it would be better than I find it at the moment. I don't think it's bad, I think that around half is really good, some of it being at least as good as anything they've released, with the rest being pretty average imo.

I don't think I've ever liked a Fall Out Boy album with the first couple listens. I don't know, it's kind of weird. I don't really know how to explain it. But like I said, I said the same thing about Infinity on High, and now it's one of my favorite albums, so I'm sure I'll like this eventually.

The songs you grow to like never stick at first. Dead on Arrival - Fall Out Boy ;) lol

I'm in love with the album to be honest, I love every single song except these

    27
    Tiffany Blews
    W.A.M.S
    West Coast Smoker

I just think those songs don't have as much direction as the others..and like Scotty said, i think they just got a bit complacent at points but no doubt these songs will grow on me as i love every single FOB song realeased.

My favourite is '20 Dollar Nose Bleed' i think it's a really genius song..amazing!.

I also think Patrick is possibly one of the best vocalists of the past few decades. His voice has grown ridiculous amounts with each record..imagine what he will be like in the next few years if his voice keeps growing.

This band never cease to amaze me. They have changed so much with every album and in my opinion that is the sign of a truly amazing band, I hope these guys will be around for a hell of a long time.

I haven't listened to the whole album yet, but so far, I think this is basically Infinity On A High II without experimentations.

They went for an album based on good songwriting and singing, if you think that's the case here then the album couldn't be any better, but I find it rather bland.

Two songs about "Not Caring" really isn't the way of getting rid of the oversensitive (emo) tag.

I can't say I'm too excited about the cliché lyrics, which I seriously didn't mind or even notice too much in the previous albums.

I think Patrick's voice has changed for the worst, he sounds like a freaking RnB singer. They really annoy me so, yeah.

Patrick's range has gotten bigger and his voice has gotten stronger, and he is probably a better vocalist than a good deal of pop singers at the moment. But if you prefer generic pop-punk vocals then fair enough, I guess. Dismissing him as just another modern R n' B singer is narrow and misinformed though.

I don't think either of us meant to imply we don't think he's good, because he's a good vocalist, but there's no reason for him to do half the weird "R&B-style" vocals he does half the time. Doesn't fit, in my opinion.

    I HAAATE the "I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I didn't I don't"

I see what you mean now. I don't know if I'd say I'd wanted to punch him but when he sings that really low note at the start of Cooperstown he sounds... weird, haha.

    Exactly.

I think this is Fall Out Boy progressing into something even more produced and generic.

It's like they've taken one facet of their music, in this case Patrick's vocals, which he uses in an RnB-style for the entire album and they just blew it out of proportion.
It seemed to me, though, the last album had him doing more different kind of vocals, which I enjoyed. The albums before that he did a typical pop punk vocal (although, I found them rather original maybe because of the high pitch and swooping vocals), yes, but I still consider those their best albums.

It's not just the one song, though, it's the fact that he uses it across the entire album to the point where you can't understand the lyrics and it just gets annoying.

Well, in regards to how the vocals apparently don't fit and not being able to understand the lyrics, that's not really a problem I have with it. I'm sure I've told you before but, to clarify just in case, I do actually prefer the two albums before IOH to their others, and I've said in this thread I don't think this album is all that good. I just don't see why people are taking issue with the vocals in particular. Are you sure that they don't fit the actual music or do they just not fit your expectation of what Patrick ought to sound like?
I wouldn't even say they're a great deal more generic than they were earlier in their career, three or four songs aside. Poppier music =/= more generic music.
