It's been one long journey folks, but the wait is finally over. Mozilla has just posted the final builds of Firefox 1.0 to their FTP servers for everyone to grab. Firefox 1.0 comes with a whole host of new features; we asked Ben Goodger, Firefox developer, what he was most proud of.

"Overall, the group of people that got us here. But as far as features and code goes, I guess the Extension and Migration systems. They were both large and interesting challenges in their own rights, and I learned a huge deal in the process of creating them."

Firefox 1.0 was compiled early on the morning of November 9th, and included a change in the CVS branding value of the browser. Ensure that you've downloaded the final build from one of the mirrors listed below, as many sites are falsely offering "nightly" Firefox builds as the real 1.0 release. Be sure to stay with Neowin throughout the day as we keep you up to speed on Firefox 1.0 launch happenings.

    Updates:

The majority of servers have been mirrored. Check here for some additional download mirrors if you run into one that hasn't been updated yet. Mozilla has also updated their browser start page. Check here for a screenshot, and view the real thing (hosted at google) here. Also, Mozilla.org has been updated with information on the release : here. CNN is featuring Firefox on their technology portal. Join in on the official Firefox 1.0 launch webcast and discussion from 2-7PM PST today.

Have you just downloaded Firefox? Want some advice on installing, setting up, or just curious about the browser? Read our updated Firefox guide. We've got great tips and tweaks, as well as a list of useful extensions to get you started, and help you to get the most out of Firefox.

Ben Goodger has updated his Blog with some interesting stuff concerning the 1.0 release. Read the whole entry here.

This day has come a lot later than any of us originally planned, but that's the way software goes. I've learned a lot about a huge number of things in the process, have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of different people about their experiences with the software, etc. It's been a long road but we're finally here. No software is perfect, we did not fix every bug, implement every feature, but what we did do was create what we believe to be the best browser around. I want to thank you all again for the support over the past few years.

We also asked Ben what the progress was after 1.0 :

"After 1.0 we plan to resync our development work with the Mozilla trunk so that we can immediately pick up the great work that's been going on with Gecko since we've been away, continue our HIG compliance efforts for MacOS X, improve existing systems and plan for the next major release. The first interim release will be 1.1 in or around March 2005. ".
