I've got an external hard drive; I've had it for about two years now. Starting today, it's been operating very slowly. It works, and all my files are fine, but it takes lots of extra time to open folders. I'm not sure why. I'm asking on here what the problem may be because I wouldn't even know what terms to use to search for an answer myself. So basically, the problem is that it's taking way too long to open folders, sometimes in excess of two minutes, and it's sort of irritating, especially since I'm navigating back and forth between several folders.
yeah try using either the Windows Defragmenter or Diskeeper (proprietary software but the best defrag software, $30)
If you had somewhere else to store the data for awhile you could reformat the Hard disk, that is if defragmenting the disk doesnt work. Failling those to options the hard drive is gone
The hard drive still words, it's just a little slow. I'll defragment the drive tonight and see if that helps. I'll bet that's what it is, since it's never been defragmented... ever. -edit- Oh yeah, definitely needs defragmented.
It's quiet as a mouse, Todd. I defragmented my hard drive and it's running perfect now. I guess this can be closed.
Thats good. I was reading your original post and thought it sounded like the drive might be crapping out, but usually, you can hear it dying. Anyways....closed as requested
