Ok I plan to learn guitar next year for my birthday, but this year I don’t have the money...what I want to know is; is it hard to play? and how do you get so many diverse sounds out of one musical instrument, for example, you have the "hit the floor" sound, really heavy hard hitting, then you have Carlos Santana, some beautiful stuff, do you have to use different guitars or what? I wouldn’t think so because I see some songs start off slow, then all the sudden bam!!!!! It’s hard and sound totally diff....so basically, is guitar hard to take, and how long it does take to get good, for the average person.

Most of the time the different sounds just depends on what effects you use. I have this big effects pedal and I can go from an underwatery sound, to big distortion like Brad, smooth clean chords, whatever. IMO its easier to play than acoustic guitars, just because the strings are thinner and softer. For the most part theyre closer to the frets.

most of the time it depends on the effect pedal.

EDIT: it does matter which type of guitar you have. i have two and one sounds more Dirty. and the other has a more tighter sound

It's all about the humbuckers (sp?) quality :D . And you have a "switch" on your guitar that can change the way the humbuckers pick the vibrations, so that changes the sound, but when it comes to a wide array of sounds, the pedal is the way :D .

I have a question about guitar buying as well...

I am gonna buy a guitar once this semester is over and I need to know what is important to look at when buying a guitar (i.e. what do I NEED in a quality guitar?)

Thanks ahead of time for your help. ^_^

You are the client, you have the power :D . Try all those who fit your budget. You are the one who knows wich sounds the best to you and wich one is easier to play on. If the guy says you can't try, go elsewhere.

The amp is important too. There, also ask for a try.

Yeah but he doesn't do that all of the time. They need them when they play certain songs like Step Up to get some different sounds. But yeah he's jumping 90% of the time.

    I suggest a Fender guitar for a beginner ^_^

Also, if you want to change effects in the middle of a song you need a effect pedal and they can cost about $100
