Edgar Allan Poe is my idol. Though I know only some specifics of his life, his work has amazed me since the first time I was exposed to his writings. I haven't been able to read all of his work, though, never could find it around, but he is an amazing guy. People seem to consider him odd, but I consider him like, a poetic God in my eyes .
Oh my god you love Edgar Allan Poe too, Anya? *Looks up at my big book I bought for school titled "The Complete Works Of Edgar Allen Poe"*. Poe is one of my favorite writers of all time, his descriptions and his style of writing cannot be matched by any of today's writers and I don't think there will ever be a writer like him ever again. *Visited his mansion in Pa*.
http://www.pambytes.com/poe/poems/alone.html Probably his most lame poem, but i love it. From childhood's hour I have not been As others were; I have not seen As others saw; I could not bring My passions from a common spring. From the same source I have not taken My sorrow; I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone; And all I loved, I loved alone. Then- in my childhood, in the dawn Of a most stormy life- was drawn From every depth of good and ill The mystery which binds me still: From the torrent, or the fountain, From the red cliff of the mountain, From the sun that round me rolled In its autumn tint of gold, From the lightning in the sky As it passed me flying by, From the thunder and the storm, And the cloud that took the form (When the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view.
I like his poems & stories and all, but his personal life is more interesting to me than anything he's ever written.
I know he married a 12 year old, but I don't remember if it was his cousin or not. She died of a disease, too, right? Or something like that :wth:.
Yeah he's like my friggin' hero now. I heard he married his cousin. edit: nevermind.. keaton and casey mentioned it before me. I didn't read it. But that's not the reason of course. I just studied him at school.. and we were going over that poem. So now I absolutley love him!
I have never heard of this guy or read any of his stuff before now. This guy is ####### amazing! Wow! I'm happy you put up this topic Anya, thanks!
I love his stories & poems. I own a book with a lot of his writings. I think I first read one of his stories in third or fourth grade. His life wasn't so glamorous, though. Yeah, he did marry his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia who did later die. He was an orphan and was kicked out of college and cut off financially from his guardian. He was also a heavy alcoholic, I believe.
"The Raven" is incredibly. And "The Telltale Heart" (he wrote that, right)? And the poem Sxero posted is great too.
He's extremly famous, i'm suprised you never heard of him. Oh well.. glad you like it.
never heared of him as well.... pfff i am too lazy to read that all.... can somebody tell me shortly what it is about?

Summing up Poe's work leaves out the effect it should have on the reader.
What a lack of respect for an infamous and incredible writer. Ugh. J-Flex, if you wrote a story and someone took it, read it for 10 seconds, then said "that's too long, tell me what it's about", wouldn't you be insulted that your work is not being appreciated? Bah.
I have a theory about the eye.. I think the reason why he hates it so much is because when he looks through 'that eye' it resembles some sort of window that he sees through. And when he looks through that window he see's himself. He probably doesn't think very highly of himself. He refuses to believe he's insane. So when he looks through 'that window' it angers him because he'd rather lie to himself than believe that he really was a mad man. But--the eye could also result as a figure of paranoia.. "I took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings. I then replaced the boards so cleverly so cunningly, that no human eye--not even his--could have detected anything wrong." the part where he mentions, "that no human eye--not even his--could detect anything wrong." to me, shows a sign of paranoia. He's afraid of people watching him.. It seems that he thinks no matter what nor who, even if they're dead--that someone must be watching him no matter what.
