Hi, I'm currently on Vista RC2 (that could be half the problem) but I'm slowly beginning to despise it as every once and a while my CD-R/DVD-Rom drive will stop functioning and will not list itself in my list of drives on my computer.

Even worse when i go to device manager it is listed as:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

This is beginning to piss me the fuck off. I know a bit about PCs but nothing I do here seems to fix it permanently (only temporarily).

I have a Philips DVD + RW DVD8631 that came from the factory. Searching automatically for updated drivers as well as looking for an internet fix have produced no answers. Help!

When this happens, will the disc tray open? If it doesn't, then I'd say your DVD drive is dead. If it does, then it could still be a DVD drive issue or Windows.

It'll open and close, it just wont 'start'. Like now it works cause I did a system restore to two days ago, but it'll act up soon again.

Dump Vista, if you can. You need to wait awhile before making upgrades. In fact, my dad just upgraded his PC to Windows 2000 lol.

Seriously, right now Vista is a can of worms. You'll be better off without it.

Do you have these problems in any other OS environment? If you do, it's likely the drive has gone bad. I replaced mine recently that was doing a similar thing and it took care of everything *shrug*.
