An amazing progressive rock band that has influenced me in the past year. From songs to 3 minutes up to 43 minutes, they have a wide range of styles and awesomeness. I saw them live for my second concert with Iron Maiden this past summmer and it was an amazing show. It's a shame that Mike Portnoy(drummer) left Dream Theater. He was the lifeline of Dream Theater. Do you like Dream Theater? Post what you think about them.

I love Dream Theater. It was one of the only bands I wanted to see live, and I missed last summer's opportunity. :(

Have all their albums, and they are serious rockers, or just about most of them.

I am a bit dissapointed when Mike Portnoy left, I hope he has his break and returns to make new great stuff.

Which is funny, since many people will argue that Dream Theater lost their vibe when Derek Sherridian left, while others will say the same that they lost their sound and taste after Train of Thought. I still love their work regardless, just improvements over time.

I just heard about that. I wonder what Portnoy is going to do next.

Ditto. He's an amazing drummer, which means he has lots of options available to him.

I'd definitely go see them live again, great show. Haven't listened to any of their music in ages, always love putting on Images and Words though.

I love Dream Theater, especially now that MP has left. I've been a fan since around late '05/early '06. Favorite albums are Awake and Falling Into Infinity. I'm really excited to see what they'll write with their new drummer.

How have I not posted here?

Metropolis Part II: Scenes From A Memory is the single best progressive or concept album ever, in my opinion of course. They're phenomenal musicians, yet on at least that album, and Images and Words, they show it tastefully.

Too bad Portnoy is gone, I'm pretty sure the band is dead now... Sad as that is.

Eh, I'm sure Dream Theater will be fine without him. Based on most discussion at DTF (DreamTheaterForums.org), there's widespread belief that MP was choking creativity within the band anyway.

The drumming was the only good and creative thing about Dream Theater, IMO.

Portnoy choking their creativity? Look at the liner notes for their albums and see who is credited on more songs than any other member of DT...
I dunno, it seems that most of their passion comes from Portnoy.

I just don't see Myung writing an AA suite, for example.

Well, Myung wasn't really able to write at all under the rules Portnoy set. MP decided after Falling Into Infinity that all lyrics written have to come with a ready-made musical composition. Since Myung doesn't write lyrics like that, he was basically shut down.

There are other things, and I'll try to find some videos of their studio sessions, but it becomes pretty apparent that MP is a tyrant in the writing process.

I'll have to ask my DT friends to find this one video for me (I saw it like three years ago and forgot about it :p), but there was this one point where DT was in the studio writing for BC&SL and MP and JP were in a disagreement over some section of a song where MP liked the way it sounded, and JP liked another way. They entered a contract where they would present both versions to the rest of the band and they'd vote on which version of the section sounded better. JP's version won, MP complained, and they tore up the contract.

Also watch the commentary of Live Scenes from New York for a revealing look into the relationship between MP and JM.
